I know that bapu bought one and returned it because it didn't do what he wanted it to do.  I can't remember the details on what he didn't like about it.

    The tracking was terrible.

I used a "true" MIDI cable.

    Hi Bapu,

Could you expand on "terrible"? Was it simply slow, inaccurate, etc.?

A million years back ( 1986?) Suzuki sold a very similar instrument you found at Toy'rUs for like $199. It was same rubber fret board and had 6 rubber trigger raised lines for string triggers. It was small and made for kids. They made 2 models, one had a MIDI jack. They were the equivilant of a Cheap Casio Keyboard but with weird rubber trigging system. There was a review similar to the SOS review at the time.
I never could track the one with the MIDI down ,and only found the none MIDI model. It ceartanly was weird to play but it worked.

Bapu, by rights it should track as fast as a keyboard controller. Did you try the USB conections?

Slow reaction time, may extra notes. Chording was awful (missed notes).

Maybe I did not spend enough time training myself but I can get more out of keyboard (which I have) than that thing.

Hi Guys - Many of the tracking issues with the YRG are rather old issues as the last few firmware updates (especially the most recent released about a month ago) have GREATLY improved the overall tracking and play-ability. There are also lots of tweaks that can be done to personalize your YRG and they are well worth the time invested.

I know many still view this as a "toy" but it is really a great device to transition from using a standard keyboard midi controller to a guitar and also the internal sounds, portability, etc make it an awesome practice tool & travel guitar. I think having an open mind with these types of products is the key to really getting the most out of their potential.

I used to play guitar and acually started as a gutarist then switched to keyboardist; but I got one of thse YRGs - just haven't had any time to dig in, but I definitely hope to - and like what it is and can do.

If nothing else, I figure it'll make me think a little out of the box, so to speak.

Thanks for hipping me/use to updates - I'm sure they'll help.

    I own a Roland GR50 guitar synth ( 1985?)

It is to be noted that a guitar synth is not a guitar and not a keyboard (or a drum kit) It is to be played as a guitar synth. Any attempt at expecting it to play as anything else will disappoint.

They take a bit of practice to work out the bugs. It’s a testimony to how sloppy your guitar playing can be when you first  play one and hear all those glitches and miss triggered notes. You soon learn to adjust your technique and clean up your picking style.

What appealed to me about these non pitch  to midi types is for inputting bass. With pitch to midi low notes are slower to be converted into data so therefore timing is terrible. I solved this by playing bass lines 2 octaves higher but what a pain. Then I had to strip all the millions of controller data away as storage was a problem back then. One bass note created 100’s of events!

I would still like to try one of these just for fun. One of my class acts was  “Great Balls of Fire” using the synth. The flute intro to “Heard it in a love song” ( Marshall Tucker) and the cool organ on “Whiter shade of Pale” “Runaway”

It's qucker/easier to pick up a real electric bass... and play the part.
Even allowing for a little slop/mistakes...

And then use Melodyne to generate quantized MIDI and then use SI-Bass, Trillian or NI Basses to get some real tone.

Well this for me was way back when MIDI was all you could use for your backing band. I hated playing bass lines on a keyboard, they always come out sounding like ,,, well,, keyboard bass,, which we all know is wrong. I never use midi for bass anymore since audio went digital. One of the big reasons I bought the GR 50 was to input bass parts, it never worked very well. So it became a interesting toy,, gathering dust at the moment.
