You guys talk me out of it...

Waves SSL 4000.

MSRP $650

Can be found for more or less $500

Current price at AudioDeluxe $369.99 for registered users.

Similar offerings/equivalents

Duende Essential (channel strip + Bus Comp) = $500
NI Solid Mix - $200 w/ voucher but has a couple of disadvantages (the GR shell for starters)
UA - requires hardware.

Man, between that and them dropping iLock, Waves really want me on their customers list... Fortunately, V9 isn't out just yet, this helps me resist (though I could buy and download when V9 comes out...:s)

Have you ever used or heard them before? That would be my only concern.
It's a good price though, $199.00 for the CLA classic comps is too.

Yup...It looks like Waves has finally gotten the message regarding pricing and customer support.  They've been having (and have) some very good deals lately in the run up to V9.  It really should be any day now that V9 and the "cloud license" program are announced.  I'd wait at least a couple of weeks to see what's shakin.

Had the opportunity way back when they first came out, during a session over at a friends studio. And I was blown away.

I'm just waiting for a sign, like them announcing that v9 comes out tomorrow or something. lol

I had a look at CLA too. Nice indeed. Heck, even Kramer's TTT bundle is tempting.

    LMAO!

    I bought Kramer TTT also.

What made me do the CLA Comps was that I bought TTT that comes with a year of WUP.
So I bought WUP to bring SSL up to version 8.
That gave me $166 coupon to use on another Waves Bundle.
    Hence CLA Comps.

I have to stay away from their site.

Man, I think I'm even more curious about Kramer's TTT. I'm tempted to believe that these things being modeled after hardware which was an integral part of many records I dig, they might maybe help me get that elusive color I'm after, short of actually booking time in one of those studios...

My first thought was that they probably sounded too retro, but considering that I've never been as happy w/ drums sound as I am w/ the Abbey Road 70's Drums, I guess I'm after that exact type of sound - retro. I guess I could use them for a couple of things at least.

Hey Rain, ol pal.  I've got the Kramer MPX and it's good.  But you should check out the new FabFilter Saturn saturation plus a million other things plug.  It's, as Paris Hilton might say, "HOT!".

Rain:  I bought only Kramer's MPX and use it often, but to be honest I use Magnetic II more than MPX.  I also considered the TTT bundle and downloaded it's demo, but having played with it for a week or so, the other two components (PIE & HLS) just did find places in my tracks.  Before you get the TTT bundle, I would recommend that you download the demo, "test drive" it, and see if it is really what you want.  You also might want to consider the V-Series as it may give you that vintage tone that you want.  Since you are getting the SSL 4000, the V-series would be a good alternative and give some of that vintage warmth from the past; it is modeled on the Neve desks.  When I test drove both TTT and V-Series, I bought just the MPX and the V-Series bundle. (I already had the UAD2 SSL G series Buss).

Just my 2 cents, but you should test drive the TTT to make sure it is what you want or need.  BTW, I agree with yoropal; you should definitely look at Fabfilter's Pro series which are outstanding products.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Just waiting for the iLock free v9 to come out so I can try those demos.

I guess that the MPX Tape could potentially be redundant as I have Magnetic, but I'm seeing it as an extra - what really interests me is the HLS Channel and the PYE comp.

I do not know if I would say redundant.  MPX has a different "tone" to it as compared to Magnetic.  For my ears, MPX is a little cleaner, a little more complex than Magnetic.  I sometimes put MPX followed by Magnetic on the Master.  Again, you can get a demo to try out before you buy it.
