Your Indulgence Please

Lady's and gentlemen, your indulgence please.

I got inspired by some of the good Blues songs being posted on this forum. Soooo --- I started out to write a Chicago Blues style song. Well, it ended up sounding like more of a Rock song --- it was all wrong. So, I started over. Have you ever tried taking a song in a certain direction but it seems that the song ends up taking you in the direction that it wants to go. In this case the lyrics, may have forced the situation.

Anyway, this is how it ended up. I just couldn't get the Chicago Blues sound but I think that it still qualifies as the Blues. It is called "Night Time Shades Of Blue". I would appreciate any comments on how I can dress it up.
Oh and yes I do have delay on the lead vocal. I just can't seem to break myself of that nasty habit.

Cool song, but I would back off the reverb a lot and it sounds like you have some compression pumping going on.

I like the idea you have here, but the recording needs some CPR. It seems distorted? The vox? and the FX that you're using on them isn't blowing my skirt up. :-( I like the harp :-)

    Foxwolfen and Robby,

As usual I appreciate your insightful comments. Given my lack of knowledge in utilizing GT Pro and in mixing songs, I find this the hardest part of any song. I have much to learn and as such I take what you say to heart.

One thing, that I noticed in re-listening to this song is that the vocals and lead guitar overwhelm the rest of the song and are too powerful for the remorseful softer sound the song is intended to have. The only FX used on the vocals is the delay (just a little bit). I think that I may have recorded at too high a level and that could have built in a bit of distortion? Back to the computer "drawing board". I did use overdrive, and compression (Zoom 505II effects box) on the lead guitar and I think that over did it.

As I am on a learning curve, can you explain what "compression pumping" is?

    Thanks

You may want to surf the techniques forum, good stuff there, but "compression pumping is when YOUR MIX IS UP HERE, and your Compressor Is Up Here?" AND the RESULT is SOMETHING like THIS.

If its only a delay then the pumping sound maybe due to phasing?

Song sounds generally good to me, but that reverb on the vocal is overpowering everything.

I'm only on PC speakers in work now, but will listen again at home.

I quit fighting the stubbornness of my songs looong ago...

And I'd love to comment on your song, but sound just flat quit working on my system! Out of the blue. I have no idea why...

Okay, I can play the song now-- and I'm getting HUGE distortion from the download...

Sounds a bit like something the Byrds might have made in the mid 60's, it has that psych/country vibe to my ears. The vocals do have too much effect on them and it's making them sound a bit confused. There are some great ideas in this track, it just needs some honing to get the best of it.

I suppose I agree with everybody else about the effect on the vocals but, there's something a little twisted and weird (in a good way!) in this song that just brought a smile to my face. That may not have been your intent but I enjoyed it a lot. You don't need to 'dress it up' though - maybe undress it a little:)

Having spent alot of time on Halstead St. and Rush St. in Chicago, I don't know what to say!! I really like the tune but can't classify it's style and I think that's great! Bluesy yes, but there's other thing s going on, too. You don't hear a lot of 3 part harmonies in the hard core blues clubs, or didn't used to but I certainly wouldn't mind. So, good work. I like your music!
