Your Love

Some background on this song.

Pat & I wrote this some time back.... late winter IIRC. After completing it, I tried to get a female vocalist to sing this tune.... that was like...well........ difficult.

I finally found a lady on the Taxi forums whose boyfriend (Wade) contacted me, and they recorded this in his studio in just a few takes. The singer is Margaret, recorded in Wade's studio. She had two editions in 2 keys to choose from. Some parts are a bit low on her register, but considering that we didn't spend a great deal of time creating a version in a better key for her..... I think she did well on this.

I sent the song to our one and only Janet, who agreed to play the piano part despite being busy with all sorts of other things. She sent me the midi file which I did some minimal manual editing to it and rendered it with Cakewalk's Sound center Grand Piano #3.

Everything else was done in house.

It is a christian song, about the Love of God.

Genre: Christian Country

YOUR LOVE

Lyrics:
I can't begin to say, what life would be like today.
Without your love to guide me every day
I can't recount the times, I thought I would never find.
What it means to know true peace of mind

Your Love is warmer, than the mid day sunshine
Stronger than the wind in a raging storm.
You carry me though the good times and the bad times ( thank you Lord)
All I'll ever need Lord is your Love

You helped me conquer fears, that haunted me for years.
Showed me how to face them without fear
You suffered all the pain to wash away my shame
Pour your love on me, like warm summer rain.

When the day is done, and nighttime comes,
you'll be there to walk with me.

Your Love is warmer, than the mid day sunshine
Stronger than the wind in a raging storm.
You carry me though the good times and the bad times ( thank you Lord)
All I'll ever need Lord is your Love
All I'll ever need Lord is your love
Your Love.

Looking for commentary on the overall mix. Levels, EQ, etc..... let me know what you think.

Really nice song, Herb, and that gal can sing too.  Very pretty, and nicely done.  Good arrangement and production.

It is a pretty song Herb, I'm not a fan of your singer... :-( She had her moments, but there weren't enough IMO. But I can be a pretty harsh critic on singers, especially when they can't hit back :-) You should go back and edit your original post and put the words on it. Your guitars just kicked in, very nice.

    Robby....done.

The biggest problem for Margaret was the fact that the song would have been better for her in a different key, a few steps higher.  This was kind of a she heard it decided to do it as is and that is what we have here. As she started to get into her (higher) comfort range, I think she did well. Maybe on the next one, we'll work to find the right key. This was our first attempt at working together.

I think the voice needs to come up a bit.  Somehow her performance does not show emotion or conviction.  But I usually have my singers sing their parts many times before they start to show more confidence and two times is not enough.

It is a nice song and the instrumentation is well produced.

Vicente, thanks for the comments... the singer recorded this at her boyfriend's studio. So I had very little artistic control over the vocal session.  There are a number of things I would have asked her to do differently. Perhaps when we work on something else, we can get a dialog going or use skype so I can "be in the room" for the session as well.  They did send me 4 tracks of vocals and I used 2 of them (IIRC) to arrive at this vocal track.

Levels are easy to fix..... I too had thought that the vocal needed to come up in a few places. This is what I'm looking for.... I can insert an envelope and that will solve the level issue. Thanks.

I sing a song many times "for weeks..." before I record it, and then many times during the session to get the right feel.

I do the same thing.... singing  it as I write it so when I hit the studio, it is generally second nature.

Great song, great instrumental patching and playing! I can tell M. was out of her optimum vocal range but she did a fine job just the same. Sweet guitar solo. That solo really hit home. Love it!!!!!!!

Great tune Herb, I think she has a great tone, but no special moments like the guitars have around 3:04. What vocal chain did you use on her? Mic sounds a tad brittle on the top end, could be the mic or maybe too much hipass? Hell, could be soundclick. Good tune!

    Hi Herb,

Very nice song. I'm listening on cheap headphones and everything you had control over sounds great.

Nice key change into the solo...nice solo section, as well.

The instruments sound great...especially like the organ and bass on this...and, of course, Janet's piano.

Listening w/ headphones on my laptop so I can't comment on the mix much but it sounds fine.  She did a decent job considering the noted range issues. Wow the guitar solo just kicked in ... very nice. Janet sounds fine as well. The pedal steel is occasionally a bit to strong but it could be my listening conditions.
