Your catalogue??

I'm assuming most, if not all of you are guitar players. Though it would probably be the same if you played bass, keyboard or whatever....

Do you record every riff you come up with?
Do you keep them in a single file (project)?
Do you open a new project for every riff you come up with & try to make a song for it then & there?

Is there anything about GT that makes the writing process easy for you?

I upload my songs to Ultimate Guitar:

The stuff I write is done like this... I punch in chords in a program called Band-in-a-Box, and from there, when the song is done, I save each track (drums, bass, etc.) as a wave file, which I import into GT4.  It's rare that I don't come up with a riff or song while practicing, and so every practice session pretty much is the writing of a song or the recording of it.  And so, I do record my riffs as they occur during practice.  When it comes to vocal type songs and a melody, I tend to hum those into a tape recorder for later use.  Sometimes I need some kind of link, bridge or whatever in a song... in a minor or major key, and will go through some of my recorded things to see if something is appropriate.  But when it comes to guitar riffs and hooks, usually something pops up during practice and I don't keep a catalog of those.

I keep a file called ideasX (where x is the iteration of the file, I have 3 or 4), and if I'm playing my guitar and something sounds good, I'll plug in and put it down on a track.  It's a little clunky, having to start up GTP, plug in, etc, but it's worth it.  I am considering getting one of those little recorders that are about 100 bucks.
I'm also mindful some wise words from, I think, Sir Paul, who says "if it was any good to begin with, you'd remember it"
