It looks like this thread has gone in enough directions that no matter what I say may fit. Anyway, one of the best movie scores IMO is Man From Snowy River. Others must think so too, since Bruce Rowland won awards for it.

My favorite movies about music: Mr. Holland's Opus--the last song makes me cry every single time. It's a decent piece, but it's the story that gets me. For many years this was similar to my own life, but now that I'm actually writing music, not so much. But it's still a great movie.

And Music of the Heart. True story and very moving. Again, I can't remember the music at all, but the story gets me every time.

I know...sappy. Oh, well...

Mr. Holland's Opus

I've always wanted to see that one but never got around to it. What's crazy is the way Richard Dreyfus looks exactly like everyone's high school band teacher. He's the spitting image of mine as well as half a dozen other people I've talked to.

Anyhoo that reminded me of Blue, one of the Kieslowski/Preisner films, about a composer's final composition. Some really memorable scenes in that.

You've GOTTA watch it! Some have commented that they like the flashbacks to all the big 60's and 70's events and all the music they play from those decades. I mostly like the storyline and the really cool ending. :-)

Eddie and the Cruisers 2 (I've honestly never seen the 1st one, but need too)

"Yeah, tell Tony Eddie and the Cruisers are here"

I know it is fairly new - but August Rush played well at my house.

OK, noone has mentioned it so far, but what musical comedy clip-turned-movie predated Spinal Tap by YEARS, and was actually one of its sources of inspiration?

Hi,

Now we're stealing the guy's thread ...

No doubt ... Bernard Harrman is one of the very best ... considering that he also did unbelievably memorable music for a lot of Science Fiction movies as well ...

Edwards/Mancini is a good combination, but Blake Edwards himself got lucky ... he never uses the music properly at all ... it's just that the music is really good and is adaptable in spots ... kinda weird, specially when Blake was married to Julie Andrews all that time ... known for at least one musical!

I love this thread ... movies about music ... and yes ... I did mention a few ...

Nah, this is the Coffee House. Where threads about fixing bad songs turn into metaphysical discussions about the origin of life. And most other topics end up debating the virtues of treacle. I don't think anyone'll get bent outta shape if the topic "music movies" slides into "music in movies".

Although I agree with you that Edwards got lucky with Mancini, I still think Edwards had a great grasp of music in comedy (satire). I thought he did a great job in "10" with that Ravel piece (can anyone hear that song & not immediately think of Bo Derek running on the beach in slo motion?) Of course that could've been Mancini's idea.

Another thing worth noting is I don't think Mancini's work was as powerful when he worked with other directors. Example: Charade. GREAT song. Wow, what a great song. But the director (Donen) buried it so deep & cut it after 1 verse, you hardly notice it before it's gone.

I didn't know that he was married to Julie Andrews. It's a crying shame he didn't feature her more.

There was a funny movie called "So Fine" with Ryan O'Neil. He was on the couch diddling an opera singer and she starts singing. His cantankerous dad (Jack Warden) wakes up from her singing and looks downstairs to see what's going on. When he sees them on the couch and her singing, he says to himself "boy, I used to F*** like that!"
