It's an "analogue style" synth.

What sort of backing track?

I assume that if you loaded most "backing tracks" to play back on a Minimoog, then they might sound odd, too.  Especially  if you had not programmed a suitable sound first..

You may want to think of Zeta more like an electric piano. You don't import a backing track into it--you play it.

The Z3ta+ 2 is a very capable synth (not a sampler). I've used it quite a bit to fine effect. What you probably need to do is preview the presets before you attempt to use it. That way, at least you'll have an idea of what a part may sound like before it happens. Just wander through them one at a time. Take notes on the patches you enjoy. There are so many patches in the Z3ta+ 2, I doubt you'll have to go very far before you find something appropriate.

Good luck.

“Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy” is attributed to Benjamin Franklin perhaps in error, but the thought remains a worthy sentiment nonetheless.

Z3TA+2 is a synthesizer with great depth of features and sound design capabilities, as well as an extensive set of presets to get started. But I would look to other tools if I wanted a sampler. The interface is dense with controls, which can be daunting.

When the Z3TA+2 synth interface is open, to the right of the "Cakewalk Z3TA-2" title you will find the "Synth" and "Effects" buttons that display the two main pages of controls. Next to those buttons is an icon like one of a pair of dice that can randomize the preset selected. The next three buttons give hierarchical access to presets by categories. With your MIDI keyboard as input, the synth plays the selected sound (whether bass, keyboard, pad, arp sequence, or other) as you press the keyboard keys. A set of MIDI notes imported into the Z3TA+2 track would play whichever preset sound is selected.  The extensive controls on the two pages (with multiple sub-tabs on each) can modify presets into completely different sounds, or you can design sounds from scratch.

Clicking on the "Options" button in the upper right opens a drop down menu that includes access to a 66 page User Guide. One indication of the extent of features would be that Groove3 has a 24 video course on this synthesizer that provides a good introduction.

Check out the sections about z3ta+ in this free e-book.  This is a primer about synth sound design.  It's a cool synth if that's what you want to learn about.

Else, if you are looking for a general midi (GM) file playback, check out the TTS-1 synth that is included with Sonar.  It is 16 channel multi-timbral (plays back up to 16 instrument sounds at once, including drums).  Good for a back-up band arrangement.

Franklin knew what he was talking about.

If you play WX5 or EWI, you'll find the Z3ta+ 2 to be one of the most wind controller friendly synths to program. Really, it is kind of an older synth, but still very powerful and flexible. Don't give up on it. It's relatively easy to program, yet is capable of being open to a deeper level of programming as well.

Yeah i actually bought a wx5, 2nd hand...i think it might have been brocken...not sure...i didnt really like it....so i sent it back.......actually.....mainly because im a flute player 1stly.....get into the spitty jethro tull influenced funk stuff....the wx5 is closer to a sax than a flute.......i kind of found i could do exactly the same thing on a keyboard.....and the cool stuff you can do on a flute...such as jethro tull does is mostly mouth tongue  and breath technique........flute played through distortion or phaser is cool...so yeah the flutes probably best being played as a flute......however i should experiment with turning flute audio to midi....and using it with melodyne could be very cool

Alright, I have to ask...Do you work for Groove 3 ?
Because almost every single one of your comments mention how great the Groove 3 videos are.
Almost like an advertisement pitch.

I can only assume that the OP was actually asking about the included synth in Sonar, the original z3ta+ classic.  The Z3TA+ 2 is a separately purchased premium Cakewalk soft synth, with a redesigned user interface and some new features and presets.  Also the new version cannot be inserted as an audio effect like the original version could.

I recently browsed the available content on Groove3, and found that it covers some topics well. They have some gaps, and some course topics don't appear very deep. But in each course outline they offer one video lesson in each course as a preview, so you can decide if it's for you.  I would consider paying the $15 a month for a 30 day pass, as needed.  Might be a time saver compared to surfing YouTube, which can be hit or miss at times

That said, Groove3 does not have any content for the original z3ta+ classic, probably because Z3TA+ 2 is seen as the replacement.  I have both, and still think the original is very cool!

The WX5 has a fingering mode very close to a flute. One has to set the dip switches to get it. And, yes, if you want a flute sound, it's best to play flute; no argument there. I don't use my WX5 for my sax or flute sounds (except for bari sax, piccolo, and alto and bass flute sounds. I don't own those).

If you get the chance, however, to re-check out the WX5, you might want to set up the dip switches and play it with flute fingering.

Good luck.

Z3ta+2 is one of the best soft synths I've ever used, its powerful and flexible and just plain heap of fun to play with. Z3ta+ original factory patches are still accessible from it if anyone still hankering after them.

Z3TA+ 2 is way cool, but is not included even in the Platinum bundle.  You gotta pay to play!  But the original z3ta+ classic is included with Professional and Platinum.  Not to be overlooked ... very powerful, and sounds great, too!

Yup!  I posted that link earlier in this thread

That is an excellent primer for synth programming. The other synths he covers in that book are fairly dated by now, but he seems to give more than enough examples using z3ta+ to follow along with.

Simon Cann also released A FREE ebook with the chapters from "Cakewalk Synthesizers, from presets to power user, 2nd Edition" that his publisher could not fit in the printed book.  Check out the link to the download package at this link:  http://noisesculpture.com/cakewalk-synthesizers/

Yes correct, it is much easier. Creating a good sample library is a big job. And then you need the patience and skill to play it so it sounds like a real instrument.

If you are a multi-instrumentalist, recording yourself live and editing the result is what it's all about.

As usual the response and help obtained through posting threads just blows me away......Thanx everyone!!!....Yeah im not a man with much patience.......ill check that book out though, and play around with this zeta synth a bit.......i just added a m-audio finger trigger pro drum pad/step sequencer to my set up, mainly so i can jam beats rather than having to build and audition beats........The hardest thing ive found working with midi is actually just trying to find the right click tempo to suit a acoustic guitar written song that has pauses and slows down and speeds up etc etc Its really a big fat headache.......its ok if you start with a click and build the song from that........but trying to make a square fit into a circle aint that easy..................And cause as a multi-instrumentalist the hardest part of over dubbing every instrument, is the 1st 2, drums and guitar for example........You kind of have to play to a click on guitar so you can go back and play drums......but im actually about to attempt to break the rules, and lay down tracks on acoustic 1st, and then use drum pad to jam out the beats, and then record real acoustic drums to that........And yes the main draw back i know about not working with a click is editing...........anyway.......this thread was ment to be about zeta, so ill stop rambling.................Yes its the unfreindly looking interface that turns me off zeta.......but thanx guys ill take all your advices and tips, read the book, and ave ago mate!!!!

Maybe this is the answer to the click track dilemma!

How To Create Easy Tempo Maps in SONAR with Melodyne 4

Thanks to Melodyne’s advanced tempo detection and SONAR's powerful ARA drag-and-drop integration, your projects can now follow a live recording’s tempo. Simply drag a standard audio clip (or Melodyne region effect) to SONAR’s timeline, and SONAR creates a tempo map that follows the clip tempo.

So once you drag audio map to change tempo map......is it just a matter of the addictive drums now, for example will follow ?....or is there more

Addictive Drums has a "Sync Tempo" button.  When activated, it should follow the project's tempo map.

But wait, there is more!  Optional, of course

You can also create your own tempo map manually using the "Fit Improvisation" function.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnAqjtXglOQ

To use this command, you must record a reference track containing a single clip that matches your original track or tracks but has only a single note on each beat boundary. You should make sure that the reference track has one event for every single beat, with no extra beats or missing beats. The first beat of the reference track should be at 1:01:000. You can use any editing command to adjust the reference track.

And here's another trick for Groove Quantizing with AudioSnap. Extracting MIDI timing information from audio.
http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR%20X3&language=3&help=AudioSnap.15.htm

Having fun yet?

And since I'm no expert in these topics, just know enough to be dangerous, suggest you head over to the Techniques forum and start a new topic to address any specific questions you may have about these features.

Yeah abacab, that really opens up a world of possabilities, i was watching another craig anderton video last night also, going on about all this stuff.......its just really awsome......yeah that definately evaporates some of my frustration, for years ive had 2 different lots of material, songs that i wrote on guitar that i couldnt fit to a click track, and songs that i wrote over a loop that did fit to a click track....................So this new information definately will be the bridge
