ZAPPA ON SPOTIFY!
When did that happen? I remember first signing up for Spotify ages ago and being disappointed that there wasn't any Zappa on it. Just checked again tonight and his whole freaking catalog seems to be up! Has Gail gone mad?

Hi, For the last 3 to 4 years, there has been a huge discussion on the various Zappa boards about it in various threads. I am on record as having posted in that board that somewhere along the way, Gail would have to wake up and realize that taking Frank's words LITERALLY, and not necessarily "relative" to today's situation, would hurt the public knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Frank's work. In specific, I mentioned, that the stuff that was less "radio" oriented, would specifically suffer, because the appreciation and knowledge of it was more of a private thing for hard core listeners that liked his music and his work in general, as has been the case with me and many others. I also think that somewhere along the way, ZpZ is probably selling more on downloads and internet, than they are individual CD's ... specially when the original would likely be more fun to listen to, and IS in my book! Gail, has stood up, valiantly, to Frank's words. However, it's like a message in a bottle, returning to you 30 years later, and ... you could say ... that's old news! That reply came back way too late to make sense as to how things are done today and where they will be going in the future. Not to mention that she hasn't seen Dweezil, or Moonunit or anyone in her family buy a single CD in probably 10 years!

Given that the Zappa family owns the rights to all of his music (as I understand it), I would have thought that getting up there on Spotify would have been their #1 priority and I'm surprised it's taken them this long. I mean hardly anyone's buying CD's any more, downloads are on the decline (and people just share MP3's without paying for them anyway), so I would have thought the Spotify $$$'s looked like a good prospect for them. Especially when you consider they're not losing the lion's share to a record company like most other artists.

I just went on Pandora and created a Frank Zappa station and the first thing that came up was Apostrophe. I'll keep you posted. 2nd number was Sheep by Pink Floyd. Go figure.

lawp $potify pay an average of $0.007 per play http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-25217353
Well let's do a little casual math here. Say the average artist earns $2 in royalties for the sale of a CD. Now let's say an average album has 10 songs on it (bear with my assumptions). If someone listens to that whole album on Spotify, that's a total of $0.07 in streaming royalties. The $2 CD royalty is about 29 times that. Is it fair to assume that the owner of a CD will listen to it 29 times? I have albums which I've listened to many more times than that. If a consumer listens to an album 29 times on Spotify in the course of their lifetime (assuming that Spotify is here to stay), then they've earned the artist as much as they would have by purchasing the CD. Another way to look at it is to consider the viewpoint of the consumer. How many CD's have you bought that turned out to be a disappointment? You heard a song on the radio, you liked it, you bought the album. But the rest of it turned out to be crap and you only listened to it once. How is that value for money? You paid around $15 for something which got one use. Perhaps you didn't feel ripped off, but maybe you should! Some artists put out one good song per album, the rest is just filler. In contrast, think of an album you bought which blew your mind away. Virtually every song on it a classic. You paid the same amount for it, but you've listened to it 100 glorious times over the years. The difference in terms of value for money is incredible. So perhaps streaming services like Spotify put the onus on artists to produce albums which are consistently good, rather than just putting out one or two decent tracks and filling the rest of the album with crap. For an album to perform well on Spotify, you have to make sure that all of the tracks are going to be listened to again and again, not just one or two. I guess the same goes for iTunes downloads, but the problem is that people are just emailing MP3's to each other. You can't pirate a Spotify stream. Well actually you can because I believe it's possible to "rip" a stream using some kind of software. But most people aren't doing that - they're using Spotify because it's convenient, all of the music they could ever want is at their fingertips and they can listen to it all on their phones without having to worry about storage. Spotify is still relatively small in terms of users. Especially when you compare them to something like YouTube. So the paltry amount that some artists complain about earning from Spotify is largely to do with the fact that it doesn't have that many users yet. As it grows, this will change. And to be quite honest I can imagine a bit of give and take between Spotify and artists in the future. Perhaps the monthly subscription will rise, and artists will get paid more per stream. I pay $10/month and consider it ridiculously cheap, I'd definitely pay $15 or $20. Whether other people will, I can't say. But I can't see that many people closing their subscriptions in disgust because they have to pay $5 more for it, considering just how much music it gives you access to.

The Zappa Trust has been very much against the digitalization of his work for some time. Many of us have posted for a long time, that she had no choice, and if she didn't allow it, tomorrow someone else would, and then the future would take hold on its own. She has serious questions about what to release, and yes, they own almost all of it, but there is a lot of stuff they don't, and 200 Motels is one example. There are others. The main issue has been for some time a group of vociferous fans that wants the rest of the material from the "Roxy and Elsewhere" released, and kinda ignore the rest of his work. While that concert was special and the 2 LP thing was ONLY about half the concert, in the end, it was more about appeasing the rock radio audience than it was about the music itself, and this Gail, correctly, stood by Frank's words and wishes. But it's a losing battle. My main concern, and this is an issue in America, specially, where everyone here is more concerned with the rock music, than they are the composer and his/her work, is that the majority of Frank's music is going to be hidden and ignored and no one will endup appreciating any of it, other than a few "hit songs" for classic rock radio crap! AND, that is NOT, where Frank and his work deserve to be in terms of his ability and composition. But how many of you have heard any of his orchestral works? They make any comoser in the last 50 years look like a child doing nothing but fooling around with harmony and nothing else! How like pop/rock music and top ten that is!

I think it should ALL be on Spotify so that people can be exposed to all of it. Saturday I listened to Wakajawaka and Hot Rats. Chunga's Revenge will be next. Then I want to get into the early stuff I missed. I had Were ony in it for the money when I was really young and listened to it over and over... but I missed Uncle Meat, Lumpy Gravy and the others. I think I still know every word and inflection on woiiftm. I used to really like The Fillmore East album but over time it became a little over the line for me... it is still funny though and Just Another Band From LA... listened to that one a LOT... rifa! I liked The Grand Wazoo too. I guess my favorite songs have to be Peaches en Regalia and Willie The Pimp. I never cared for Yellow Snow very much. So... perhaps if it is ALL out there people will be exposed to music they would otherwise never hear. I'm glad she has tried to honor Frank's wishes but one thing is certain... when you go to the grave you lose all control of what is left here among the living. I think for anyone to criticize Gail at this point would be out of line. She should be supported in whatever she decides... IMO. I, for one, am very happy the music is there. J

Back in 1991 or so I bought the double live album "Make A Jazz Noise Here" on cassette. I played it so much the tape was completely worn out withinw a few months. So I bought it again, and wore that one out as well. Eventually I just cut the crap and bought it on CD. I think I listened to it every day for about 18 months. I was just blown away by the display of musical skill on that album, both in Zappa's arrangements and the playing of the individual band members. To this day, I could probably whistle or hum every note on the LP, including all of the whackiest atonal jazz solos. Those guys can blow some horns, and Scott Thunes' bass playing is spectacular. But I think my all time favorite Zappa album is One Size Fits All. I started listening to it when I was 3 and I've never gotten bored of it. To me that is Zappa at his best. I love the sound they had during that era. It was a perfect match of dirty rock and avant garde virtuosity. And to me, the guitar solo on Inca Roads is perhaps one of the greatest ever recorded. If I could phrase like that, my life would be complete. I've dreamed that solo in its entirety on more than one occasion - its burned into my brain like a tape recorder. The solo on Montana, from much the same era, is guitar perfection as well. Have you noticed that Zappa virtually never used vibrato? He just didn't want to shake those notes.
