Zebra wood...
I was very fortunate to find this board. It is 48" x 2x7". I thought some here may enjoy seeing zebra wood and what's going to happen to it. The next time you see it- it will be in the make of a guitar or two. I'm planning on building two at a time....sisters if you will. ( Tele's this time) I would have already started but the block for the neck thru's warped. (still moaning about that) If you'd like to see a zebra bass go to Michael Pedulla's site...worth the trip.

My! That's beautiful! I've seen something similar overseas in the rainforest. Makes absolutely beautiful flooring, etc. Funny you should bring this up. I was going to mention to you about some walnut wood I found today. Unfortunately, it's in the woodpile. :( Anyway, we started splitting wood today and lo and behold, some of it is walnut. My, that's beautiful wood. I know why you wanted some. :) Anyway, I'm not sure where it came from exactly, because I know we didn't cut one down. (they are pretty rare here anyway.) Some of it looked like it had been lying around for quite awhile, (and there was sure plenty of wood that had been lying around for quite awhile!) and I wasn't even sure if it would be worth cutting up for firewood, judging by the out side of it (no bark, starting to rot.) But the inside is solid and beautiful as ever. I wish we had some bigger pieces. Anyway, carry on...that zebra wood will make some lovely guitars! :)

Save it Janet...even the small pieces. Makes nice knife handles and such. Zebra wood is from central Africa.

That looks a little bit like gum wood - I wonder if the trees are within the same (phylum?) group.

I'm not sure Russell. No more than I know about woods I know that "gum" can sure get confusing. Naming gum woods is a trip to figure too. I had two Sweetgum trees in my yard that I took down. They were both over 9' in diameter. Not the type of wood I would build with. I would guess you're talking about Gumwood that is used for making furniture. If so, I think that it has different names...satin-walnut, hazelwood... I do know at the price of Zebrawood anybody that used it for flooring has to very wealthy and good at dealing with environmentalist. lol. If something doesn't change- if you have an instrument with ebony on it...don't get rid of it. It's not a matter of time, the time is now...nice black ebony is so expensive that if you even find nice black ebony...you may not want to pay for it. The last board I found, a 1x 4" about 50" long was $140.00 dollars and it still required dye. I got three fretboards from it big enough to do a 5 str bass. Easy to lose wood due to cracks and holes. I'm hoping the small pieces I have left can be used on the Tele's.

In my last builds I didn't start the bodies until I had the neck block and new it was straight. ( about 6 weeks of waiting) I re-sawed a section of that zebra yesterday and glued pieces for the top and bottom plate of the body. The soft maple in pic will be between the zebra. It's sized to thickness. I'm using a fiber veneer ( wood and paper) rather than dyed black Holy veneer. I've learned it makes for much cleaner lines and easier to bend if needed. I also glued the laminates for the neck block. Maple and Babinga and trying a new clamping method as I don't know for certain why the last one warped. It could be my method or the wood. May be expensive learning....part of it. This Tele is for Grant. He will not be committed to it...he just asked and I agreed to try. I'm out on that limb again! Figured ya'll might enjoy the build or the crash. lol. Well here is a shot of the body woods. My wife likes the left one for the top plate. I like the right one....and that it doesn't seem to matter much.

PS I do not have a Tele hate to think of the shipping let alone the cost of your time and materials.

Hi Mike. I like the right. There's a couple more lightning bolts in it. Beautiful wood.
