Zoom in / out shortcut

Hi,

I would like to use J and Y instead of ctrl-right / ctrl-left for the zoom in/out horizontal function in sonar. I just don't find it in the key bindings... How would I make such a change? (To me it makes more sense to use 1 finger istead of 2 hands... weird it doesn't work with the right ctrl key, only the left one)

To me that is a long cut

Try the free utility mouse scroll wheel. You don't even have to use a keyboard button, just a mouse with a clickable wheel. Much more efficent for me.

bit flippers pretty much hit the nail on the head but if you're interested, here are a couple of other ways that haven't been mentioned so far

Holding down Z allows you to enable a magnifying glass zoom. You can then click and drag an area you want to zoom in (I find it helps when looking at a coupe of tracks clsoe up). Something similar is available in pro tools

By pressing U you can revert to the previous ZOOM

also by pressing "F" you can fit all your tracks to the vertical screen space

and Shift + "F" will allow you to fit the entire project to the vertical and horizontal parameters.

the last 2 are a bit depenedent on the track count in as much as that if you have a high track count the tracks will be their smallest vertical size possible and scrolling may be needed to see everything. At this point, folders can become a a really big help navigating through your project

without insulting sonar: the zoom is (nevertheless there are about 400 different ways to do it) not so well implemeneted because the most "ergonomic" way to zoom (imo) with the "z" key aka the magnifying glass is tied to the grid resolution of the arrangewindow.. while it would be much much better without (having a "endless" resolution whatever the other setting is .. infact zooming with the magnifyig galss was (probably still is) one of those simple but perfect features in logic - it was so fluid that you zoomed in and out without even thinking about it...in sonar insted i must admit that i "hate" zooming (the weird thing is that even cubase and wavelab have a better way to zoom (even if again different from logic) for me the zoom (and i am a heavy zoomer is one of those litttle big downsides of sonar

I guess it's what you get used to but I can't imagine an easier, more intuitive way than to click anywhere in the track view and scroll/zoom in and out. Using this method one can also zoom all the way out to view the whole project and then select another area to zoom in to....all with one finger..... with the other hand on a contour shuttle pro....you don't even need no stinking keyboard!!!
So any info on the free utility mouse scroll wheel would be most appreciated.

the logic zoom worked well for both worlds at the same time: being able to go into max detail but still being able to zoom entire regions - just without loosing the "big picture" of the arrangement...brilliant !!
btw: isnt the way you describe it the sama as it works in wavelab (with dragging don the clicked mouse in the time line) ??

I"m pretty sure default is CTRL+arrow key, no? I smack those things constantly when I'm editing. I think if a better way came along I'd never be able to retrain myself.

thats the way i do it too - but i think its still slow...
i first used only Z+mouse but its not so smooth either ...

also it depends on your workstyle: i do a lot of clip slicing and rearranging (almost like a living rexplayer )
thats why i am not so satisfied ...

Actually, you don't need the mouse utility. Just hold down the alt-key and move the wheel and you can zoom back and forth like crazy.

WOW.  I did not know this.  My life will never be the same. Awesome Awesome Awesome! Between that and my horizontal mouse wheel utility, I'm navigating around like a Sonar Magellan. Sweet.
