a new instrumental - "Redwood road"

https://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/redwood-road

this is a first pass mix......
i'm thinking about turning this one into a song....

slight deconstruction:
get rid of all the solo guitar;
but keep the clean guitars.
add in some super dry crunch rhythm, just stabs of it...
vocals are high, and kind of sassy.
if that's a term.
ideas?

Kinda works for as it stands Rob... Sorry

I'd lengthen the quiet bit at 1:52.

Vocals would change the whole thing... Make it longer than three minutes perhaps? And when you say "high," do you mean female vocals or Bee Gee's style? I'm not sure what "sassy" is.

Is the bass guitar off to the left somewhere? Not a lot, but I thought it should be in the middle. The interesting thing is, it works well where it is (assuming it is where I think it is...).

Oh, and the drums appear over to the left too, so either my ear wax problem is back, or you just haven't got around to working on that yet. Or perhaps that's where you want them?

    cheers

    synkotron-
interesting thing about this drum track...
    i created it in acid,
    a long time ago...
and i only have the stereo file to work with.

i had originally put a waves S-1 stereo imaging tool on it, then took it off.
when i had it on, i had used the 'assymetry' control to swing it a bit to the right,
    to more center the drums....
there is a bass part in the drum track, that is synthetic...
but then i overdubbed the exact same part played on a straight bass, and centered.

i may have to play with that rotation effect again....
or maybe just pan the REAL bass to the right a bit, and not mess with the stereo spread as it is,
it always sounds a bit clownphuccked when i use that effect

high vocals would mean tenor range....
sassy would mean sing song, syncopated

The side of you I enjoy the most. Your funky side. Got a great groove, I would say the solos are subtle enough to keep as comping for the vocals. Three vocal styles come to mind for some reason, Lenny Kravitz , Prince or possibly Freddy Mercury. Not sure vocals are necessary though, I certainly dig it as is.

Love it! I know you already worked hard on the bass and you say that there was a synthetic track in there....I couldn't tell any of this. I especially liked the bite the bass has in the higher mids...I think it gives it a of of sass. I couldn't hear a lot of low end on my system though. I don't mean really low...more like the 200-300 range??
I don't know if you have sonar platinum...but I think you could use drum replacer here if you could get the track adjusted right..then you could use bass samples if necessary...just a thought and maybe a bad one :)

The guitars as always are some of the best! Vocals? Man I could hear something like a long part over the top of everything like the girls in Heart.

    hey grant,
    thanks for listening!

well, if i go the vocal route,
it's going to change the entire song.

    as it is,
for about half the songs i've ever released,
they started out as instrumentals like this.....
i keep the old versions, just for fun,
but i've been trying to post the early versions of them in the last few years,
to get feedback for ideas about lyrics, and arrangements, etc, that i often times use to kickstart an idea.

i've got enough material NOW, for my next album,
    but i'm still floating ideas.

I agree that it works as is but I also think it would shine with some lyrics, furry ears ready for the remix

    THANKS FOR LISTENING, starise....
i'm showing a good bit of low end,
but intentional roll off at about 40hz....
but i can look at that 200 area,
it's either missing in the kick, or the bass.

i like the drum tracks/sounds as is,
don't think i'd want to do a 'replacer' (whatever that is) but it does mean that if i take this as a vocal tune,
i may be able to mix the drums hotter without all the guitars stepping on the critical clarity ranges.

I like it. Nice guitar work as always, and I like the driving bass. I hear the drums and bass a little off center, but I'm listenin with headphones on. Still sounds good to me... I also think it stands well on its own as an instrumental.

    hey wookie,
    thanks for checking it out....
i've already done the vocal version now, tonight,
    it's pretty cool.

got a bit more tracking to do on it now, before it's a wrap,
i'll post a bit of it soon.

the drums are intentionally panned as so,
tho it seems to bug more than not.

finished the vocal version last night....
at least, did the vocal writing and arranging,
will probably add a few more elements.
will post a snippet of that version soon.

    THANKS LYNN.....

the vocal version works just as well as the instrumental here...but is COMPLETELY different.

i can imagine that some that like the instrumental, will not like the vocal version.

and those who hear the vocal version first, will end up not liking the instrumental version!!

LOL again........ this judgement based on past experiments of the same kind......

WELL, THE RE-TRACKING sessions went real well the last two days..
    i'm happy with the changes.

    it rocks.

    it's kinda dark, material wise,
i tried to make it hopeful and desperate at the same time......

the new version will be called "Angel".

i'm going to do something different with this one,
    well, just a little different,

i'm going to mix the levels from the Sub Buss level.

all clean guitars have a buss,
    all vox have a buss,
    bass = buss,
    drums = buss,
    heavy rhythm guitars = buss

    and lead guitars = buss

i found that once i put faders up on the rhythms, vox, bass, and drums, it kinda mixes itself.
only the lead guitars, occasional heavy rhythm guitars and vox's really need rides overall,
so i'm gonna automate the busses instead.

    why not.
