Here's a really short orchestral theme I've been working on.

Sounds good.  The solo horn sounds good. The backup horns sounded kinda midi to me.  Now that could really just be me.  I don't listen to this style of music unless I'm up here.  Interesting piece.

Thanks guys! All the brass was actually recorded live- trumpet, baritone (as a tuba stand-in), trombone. The strings, non- and chromatic percussion, piano, etc were midi. Glad you like it!

    very nice, David

the percussion's a little weak, I would love to hear those timpani really thunder on my speakers and the cymbal swell to really fill the room.

Thanks Beagle, I usually put a boost or EQ on TTS-1 tracks- not sure why I didn't this time! I'll keep that in mind for future projects like this.
How is it from a composition aspect?

Wow!  I like the piece!  Just curiously ... can the brass be done with synths?  I ask only because recently (the last few days) I begun trying to learn how use more tools within SONAR.  I am not a musician (I play no instruments) and am only beginning to realize some of Sonar's capability!

That sounds quite good here are you going to develop it some more?

That's really good David, very nicely composed and arranged. You have a good ear for brass arranging. I'd like to hear more like this.

I think you did a great job on this  Dave...I think it fits well into a theme where you don't want epic but close...it could fit into many movie scenes. The mix is nice and clear. Did you do all of it in Sonar?

Ooh, this thread got pushed down, I didn't realize there were replies. To answer you guys for the most part...
I did do it all in SONAR! Percussion and Piano were all TTS-1, and all the strings were done with SI-String Section (and a little use of envelopes, which helps a LOT)

@cpkoch, I've tried brass like this and I have yet to find anything free that will make things that sound realistic enough for use in this way. EW Quantum and some others have some really high-quality (and high-priced!) synthesizers that would work quite well though.

I'm actually continuing work on a follow-up composition, essentially an evil-theme/boss battle type thing. I'm not sure when I'll be done, but it's coming along well.
    Thanks for listening, guys!

yep, I like it. I was really hoping your lead trumpet was a VST, but bummer, it's real.  :)

nice job! It's been ten minutes since I listened, an I can still recall the melody and the general gist of the thing. Would work well in many applications.

    cheers,

This is cool. My brain linked it to Star Trek, sounded spacey and authority to me. Nicely done.
