adding reverb to midi drums seperately. Kic,snare toms etc?

Im using ez drummer for my drums and I usually will record kick and snare on 1 track. highhat on another track.cymbals on another track. toms on another track and overdub. When I open the synthrack the ezdrummer program pops up and I have a mixer for the kick, snare, the 3 toms and the highhat. With this I can control the volume and pan of each of these drum sounds. the problem Im having is, on track 1 Im recording the bass drum and the snare. I may possibly want to add reverb to the snare and not the bass drum. The mixer doesnt have the option to add a seperate effect to each part of the drum set. Will I have to record the bass drum on 1 track and the snare on a seperate so I can add reverb to the snare? this is not easy to do. the bass and snare at the same time is definately easier. there has to be an easier way to add reverb to just the snare even though the kick and snare track are together being that its midi. let ne know if you know how to do this. thanks

Hi Kevin

You're on the right lines with your set up but not quite, try this to get eight distinct tracks to work with from your kit, including the all important separation of kick and snare.

When you open EZ Drummer, select All Synth Audio outputs: Stereo in the Create Tracks options.

Now EZ Drummer will load the MIDI track but also eight other tracks inside the folder:

Open the EZ Drummer mixer and in the horizontal Output strip, right click on Trk 1 in one of the columns and from the drop-down list that appears, select Multichannel

By default, EZ Drummer assigns the 8 kit microphones to these tracks that inserted in MC:

Track 1 = Kick
Track 2 = Snare Top
Track 3 = Snare Bottom
Track 4 = Hi-Hat
Track 5 = Tom 1, Tom 2, Tom 3
Track 6 = Overhead (Cymbals)
Track 7 = Room (Ambient)
Track 8 = (empty)

By right clicking in the appropriate output area of each track in the EZ mixer, you can assign the microphones to any part of your kit so you can completely customise how it works.

Anyway, once you've recorded your drum parts, you can edit the kick and snare, as well as all the other mic tracks independently of each other.

Hope that helps

Steve

It's a great bit of gear Alan - really excellent sounds and so easy to use!

HERE'S just the drum track I did for one of our VeRy MeTaL songs if you want to hear it in isolation.

thanks steve. this will be awesome once I figure it out. I inserted ez drummer and selected All Synth Audio outputs: Stereo. The 8 tracks did pop up and the midi track. I opened the mixer and on track 1 right clicked and tried to select the output to multi channel and it didnt allow me to. I could select tracks 1-8 but when trying to select stereo or multichannel it would just go back to track1. If I go to track 2 the snare track, right click it, it will also only allow me to select tracks 1-8. when I select stereo or multi channel it goes back to track 2. so on and so on . Im not sure why Its not letting me select multichannel. any ideas?

also, I like to seperate the tracks so its easier. maybe I would do the highhat and cymbals on 1 recording. then overdub the kick and snare. then the toms. its just easier to overdub then to do everything at once.

you don't want to select multichannel for what you're after anyway - you want to select individual tracks for each instrument you want on different outputs. look at Steve's picture of the drum kit - see how each of those kit pieces are listed under a different TRK? (except he has all 3 Toms on one channel).

well, I read the manual and it says: You can however route any instrument or microphone to
any of the 8 available stereo tracks mapped to EZdrummer’s
outputs. This will allow you to benefit from the maximum
flexibility that your sequencer has to offer.
To perform the above click one of the mixer tracks and
select multichannel. This will select the most appropriate
routing for the kit. Of course your host has to be set up
accordingly to capture these outputs (see your application’s
manual for details). So I selected multi track on the first track and it assigned each mic to a track exactly like steves picture. When I tried to record it still is recording only in 1 track and not seperating the drums on different tracks. maybe my host isnt set up to capture theses outputs?

I figured it out. But steve, what if I only want a track for the kick,snare1,highhat and toms. do I just delete the others. I can adjust the overhead and room inside the virtual mixer.

also, does anyone know how to turn off the touch sensitivity on a MIDI KEYBOARD. I may want to have every bass drum kick at 127 to get that boommy consistency but for cymbals and keyboards I prefer the touch sensitive.

Of course your host has to be set up
accordingly to capture these outputs (see your application’s
manual for details).

the way the host is set up is not so that the multichannel will work. you need to use each track individually because that's what you selected in the host when you selected ALL OUTPUTS.

do I just delete the others.

you can delete the output tracks you're not using, but it won't affect your CPU either way.

also, does anyone know how to turn off the touch sensitivity on a MIDI KEYBOARD

if you're trying to turn it off on the keyboard, then that's keyboard specific, there's no "universal" way - you have to look at your keyboard's manual to figure out how to turn it off.

I guess I have to keep the tracks with overhead and room so I can hear the cymbals. whats the point of the second snare?

yes, at least the overhead - that's what the cymbals are mic'd to. the room is actually just an "ambience mic" to capture the reverb of the drums in the room.

what's the point of the 2nd snare? I don't remember exactly - are there not 2 snares in the kit? if not then there must be 2 mics on the snare. I'd have to check that out when I get time to look at it (I'm at work right now).

RE: adding reverb to midi drums seperately. Kic,snare toms etc? 2008/10/20 16:58:41 (permalink)
thanks Beagle, WEll, Im expreimenting and to record seperate tracks I am cloning the midi track so I can record again. Like I said before I am recording kick and snare on 1 track, clone, record over the clone the highhat, ride, cowbell or what ever is keeping time.,clone, record over with toms, clone, record over with cymbals. Its not always like this. sometimes I have the highhat, ride , and cymbals on 1 track so ther are 3 midi tracks. It makes it easier for me to edit the timing if I view the track in staff view and only have a couple of parts to look at and is also easier to record seperately than to play 2 hands and 2 feet worth of stuff with 2 hands. my concern is after cloning these midi tracks I have 4 midi tracks. can I some how view all my drum tracks in 1 view on seperate staffs to edit the right notes?
also, when recording say keyboards I insert cakewalk tts-1, I select first synth audio output. it pops up with 2 tracks. a midi track to record and another that says waveform preview. usually to record a sound I will select the midi channel I want to record on, 1-16, select the sound I want, lets say strings, press record and do my thing. when Im done with that I may want to add a piano track so I clone the mid track because there is only 1 with record on it. open the synth rack, select a different channel, select piano and record. I guess Im wondering if there is a way that I dont have to clone the track to record another track?

yes - on separate staves is easy. just highlight all of them and click VIEW>STAFF VIEW.

when Im done with that I may want to add a piano track so I clone the mid track because there is only 1 with record on it.
I don't understand what you mean by "because there is only 1 with record on it"?

cloning the track is not necessary unless you want that recorded MIDI data to stay and use it. if you just want to add another track to use with TTS-1 on a different channel, then you just need to INSERT>MIDI TRACK. then change the OUTPUT to TTS-1 1. then change the CHANNEL, BANK and PATCH information there on the MIDI track's properties (right under the OUTUPT).

also as I just mentioned there, you should not be changing the channel and patch ON THE TTS-1 face - it won't stay that way if the track properties or the event list does not have that patch. you need to change the patch and channel information on the MIDI track's properties.

ok, I think I just figured it out. load the tts-1 like i did. It will have a midi track and the other track. go up to insert/multiple tracks/under midi select the number of tracks I want to record onto/ put the port to tts-1. then I will have 4 midi track I can record onto with 16 possible different channels. Can I only record 16 different instrumennt sounds if there are only 16 channels? Or would I open another tts-1 and it would give me 16 more so I would have 32. and so on?

If you want more than 16 channels, then yes, you'll have to load a 2nd instance of TTS-1. in the OUTPUT for the MIDI track it will look something like this: TTS-1 2

ok, I did what you said and it works great. Before I was having to clone the tgrack, change the midi channel on tghe keyboard, then change the sound by using the keyboard. This is way better. everything is layed out before me. thanks so much Beagle

I don't remember the limitation on MIDI and AUDIO tracks for MC - maybe someone else does. there is a limitation, but IIRC you shouldn't have problems.

you can use AUDIO FX on the MIDI "OTHER" track - the other track that gets added when you insert a softsynth - that's an audio track. you can also do it with buses but you have to use the sends FROM that "OTHER" track.

wow, I have forgot all this. I'm trying to get this going again. Are you guys still on here? so if I wanted to add reverb to just the snare and  toms, How would I go about doing that? would I send the snare and toms to a bus that has reverb on it? I'm using MC7

Ok I think I may have figured it out. I went to my second drumtrack which was the snare and inserted an fx of reverb then adjusted to my liking. I'm thinking that if there is a way to send to a bus it might be better. IDK

hi Kevin - yes, i'm still here, but I don't show up on the forums near as often as I used to!  how are you doing?

yes, setting up a bus with reverb on it at 100% wet, then using sends from the snare and toms to that bus is exactly how i would do it.  you can control the amount of verb you add to those two kit pieces with the SEND LEVEL.  it's pretty simple to do.

I'm good Reece. Just trying to get back into this. Trying to remember the things I forgot and learn the new. I finally have a setup and a place where I can record which is great. I'll have to experiment with the reverb sends, doesn't sound too hard. Is there a certain built in reverb with Music Creator 7 you recommend? or actually any vst reverb's you recommend? Thanks for saying hi.
