advice on audio interface for x3

Hi everyone

I need some advice on buying an audio interface for my daughter. She likes to sing and play acoustic guitar and wants to start recording. I just got her x3, an i5 laptop with 6gb of ram and I'm in the process of getting an external hard drive.

I've got around £300 left to get both the hard drive and interface. Can you guys suggest anything?

Thanks
Si

If the computer has an eSATA port, that would be the fastest transfer protocol for an external drive.

The next best choice would be a USB 3 port, and an external USB 3 drive.

In either of the above flavors, a 2 TB drive runs around $100-$120, last time I checked.  I use a Seagate external drive, and it has worked flawlessly for the past couple of years.

So, for an audio interface, I would suggest a USB 2 interface, in the $150-$200 range.  That would give you a couple of mic inputs with pre-amps, hopefully +48 phantom power, and decent quality.

So, both the above would end up being within your budget.

DO make sure that the audio interface has drivers for Windows 8.  A lot of the cheaper ones are cheaper because they are essentially discontinued, meaning they will not get any new drivers, and likely only have drivers for older Windows versions, like XP or Vista, or even ME.

When you do settle on an audio interface, I would suggest starting with the following settings, as a reasonable starting point that balances performance and system demands:

Sample Rate - 44.1 k or 48 k (both Sonar and audio interface Sample Rates must match, either one should be OK)
Sonar Driver Mode - ASIO
Audio interface ASIO Buffer Size - 128

Shoot for Sonar-reported latency values of around 10 milliseconds or a little bit less, for the Total Roundtrip latency.  If you run lower than that, you may have dropouts and/or crackles and such.  If you run higher than that, you may begin to hear the latency and have a miserable time of it.

I would also recommend you download and run either DPC Latency Checker or LatencyMon, with Sonar not running, to check your system's basic ability to handle streaming audio processing, such as with Sonar.  Please note that as of the last time I checked, DPC Latency Checker did not run correctly in Windows 8, while LatencyMon works in both Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Here is the link for DPC Latency Checker: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

And, LatencyMon: http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon

Hope any of the above helps,

I would suggest you the Roland QUAD-CAPTURE, Roland drivers are the best, it works great with X3 and a ground lift could safe you from ground loops problems.

Si,
From just down the road in Cheshire.
I've enjoyed using the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. This has two nice mic pre-amps, which gives one for voice one for guitar then. You don't mention if you have mics though for recording the acoustic guitar, so I'm not sure if you need these in your budget too. These might be higher up the priority list than the external drive, as the laptop could suffice. The scarlett comes in a nice colour too, which may or may not be important !

I'd recommend the Scarlett series as well. My 18i6 has been absolutely trouble free since I got, was easy to install, has very nice mic pres and Focusrite support is great. Also I think they are a UK based company so you would be buying local.

The 2i2 and 8i6 would both fit in your price range and they are pretty much the same unit I have without as many connections BUT you also get a "loopback" feature (8i6 only I think) which I think is something a younger person might appreciate. It basically let's you run a channel from other programs directly into your DAW wihtout any wires or extra weirdness so she could input youtube vids or WMP straight into Sonar very easily for practice or whatever.

The Roland unit mentioned is nice but more expensive for what you get and personally at that price point I'd be looking at a MOTU instead who are probably a little more reliable of a company than Roland at this point.

No need for us to be nice to them anymore now that they aren't our parent company. They still make very nice instruments though but I don't think they were really cut out for this whole DAW game.

Also in regards to the HDD... with that laptop, unless it has an internal SSD (Solid State Drive) you may be better off replacing the internal drive with something faster. 7200RPM is recommended for DAWs but they have 10,000RPM drives now which are obviously even faster. The hard drives are usually what screws up DAWs on high powered laptops... well that and bloatware so try to do a clean install of windows. With the Windows license that came with the laptop you can use any copy of the SAME version of Windows (eg: Win7 Pro 64 preinstalled on the lappy will require a Win7 Pro 64 disc). If you do not have a like disc available there are methods online of stripping out the proprietary install gobbledygook of like Windows discs  (if you have a Win7 Home disc but the lappy is Win7 Pro then you can strip it out to the ISO and install Pro on the lappy). Also MS has recently released downloadable ISOs of all versions for exactly this purpose (but you still need the license/serial number from the laptop).

That way you don't have all that bloatware futzing up the recording process. Also there are optimization considerations like disabling power management features while recording. You may already know about some of that stuff though so I'll let this post be unless you ask for more info. Cheers. You sound like a cool dad.

Re: advice on audio interface for x3 2014/01/02 13:48:38 (permalink)
I would be remiss if I didn't mention TASCAM's US-322 and US-366 interfaces. As TASCAM and Cakewalk are both part of Gibson there is definitely self-interest at play. However, when I needed an interface for seminars I requested a US-366 to evaluate, and was very impressed. It's now what I'm using with my laptop (for my home studio, I'm still using the V-Studio).

What I like about it:

Mic pres. There are two combo jack (XLR mic/TRS line) inputs and they can both handle phantom power. The circuitry is discrete, not op amps, and the frequency response extends to 60kHz.
SPDIF digital I/O. Both optical and coaxial (US-366 only - see below).
The high-Z input for guitar is 1 Megohm so there's virtually no loading.
Very solid construction and compact size. I take it on the road, so both matter.
Onboard DSP. Compression, de-esser, reverb, and EQ as well as a mixer. The main use is for situations where, for example, the singer wants to hear the voice with some reverb while recording. One seemingly minor but very cool feature is that there's a button you hit to show/hide the DSP and mixer applications on-screen - you don't have to root around in a programs menu or find a shortcut.
Headphone amp. This is subjective, but it sounds better than average to me.
Inputs are on the front. A small point, but it leads to a neater setup.

Limitations:

No MIDI in or out. Granted most MIDI these days uses USB, but if you have devices with 5-pin DIN MIDI connectors, you'll need a separate MIDI interface.
Doesn't play nice with ASIO4ALL. Having ASIO4ALL installed on your computer interferes with TASCAM's drivers (which are far better for ASIO anyway, so I don't see any advantage to having ASIO4ALL installed).
You can't enable phantom power for each input individually. To be fair, virtually all relatively low-cost interfaces work similarly.
Only one headphone jack. If you're engineering someone who wants to monitor what they're doing, you'll need to connect a headphone amp to a line out.

The main difference between the -366 and -322, aside from $50 ($200 MSRP vs. $150 MSRP, respectively) is that the -322's maximum sample rate is 96kHz and there's no digital I/O. The -366 has optical and coaxial SPDIF I/O and handles sample rates up to 192kHz.

The interface market is quite competitive, and there are lots of options at reasonable prices. TASCAM interfaces had never really been on my radar until I joined Gibson, but I have to say the US-322 and -366 are very well engineered and sound excellent. And of course, going forward the drivers will always be tested thoroughly with Sonar.

Focusrite rocks that is all!
I have a Saffire Pro 40.
It's totally stable, it has a loopback facility (many interfaces don't). It has zero latency monitoring (although I use this less and less as it's fast enough).

Latency is minimal, much better than most other interfaces, ASIO drivers the best there are in any sound interface (and can handle multiple applications where other sound interfaces can't, seems to be a unique feature).
Oh and the preamps are just great.
Did I say Focusrite rocks?

I would second Beepster's comment as well ... Focusrite are a good ( UK based ) company to work with if anything does go wrong. Their e-mail responses to technical issues has been very good for me.  I can also guess that Si's daughter will recognize all the artists that use Focusrite kit.
And just to balance things out my Tascam US 144 mk2 is still doing very well also ! ( I bought this before my Focusrite interface )

I said they are nice units and they are. I wasn't slagging your suggestion, just stating that they are more expensive (true) for what you get (true) and that the company has had a bit of turmoil lately (debatable). I would also say in regards to drivers they do seem to keep up with the QC end of things but have dropped the ball on other devices (control surfaces) and they are no longer linked to the Cakewalk brand.

By all reports they are indeed excellent interfaces. I'm just offering my suggestions based on what is practical for a young lady wanting to make music problem free and a father who is looking to get something good within a specific price range.

If money were no object I'd be interested in a Roland QC. Excluding connectivity and price it likely is a better interface than my Focusrite simply for the low latency factor (but I have never had a problem with latency). However at that price point I do think I'd prefer a MOTU... knowing me though I'd likely get one of the higher end Focusrite products because I know I'd be getting a durable/quality product and a buttload more connectivity/feature set for the price.

Please don't be offended by my opinions. Believe me I'm envious of your interface as I would definitely like to own one for an alternative set of pres (and the QC has always been touted as having good pres... but so does Focusrite) and almost non existent latency (they are supposedly very powerful) but in the real world and based on my personal usage/experience/research Focusrite is a damn good company who makes a damn fine product. They're nice guys too.

Cheers.

How about that, Beeps...   The last time I was researching interfaces the QC was first on my list!   But just as you mentioned it was the total cost that first brought Focusrite to my attention, and your good experience with the 18i6 that helped with the final decision.   And absolutely no regrets at this point.

If I had the $$ I'd actually like to try the Studio Capture.

I am another SONAR user that is happy with the Focusrite brand.

I have a couple-year old Scarlett 18i6 interface and it has proven to do everything I and SONAR demand of it, easily, with power to spare.

I ain't gonna tell you any other brand or model is crap, but I will tell you that I've been dabbling in this electronic music making/production thing since I got my first Twelve Tone Systems Cakewalk Pro software sequencer back in the very early 1990s - and my Focusrite is just as fine an interface as any I've ever used over the years.

Just make sure: If you ever want to use a microphone (and it sounds like your daughter will) then it will be best to decide up front if it is dynamic or a condensor model that you want/can afford. If it is a condensor model, your interface (whatever brand/model) will have to have 48v phantom power on at least 1 input for that mic. Dynamic mics do not require phantom power.

Also make sure that the interface that you choose will connect to your laptop - if you buy one with either a FireWire or USB interface, your computer will need to have a FireWire or USB interface to plug it into. (I've seen folks complain online that they didn't know their computer didn't have FireWire *after* they bought a very pricey FireWire-only interface).

As to external drives: Get what you can afford. USB works fine. eSATA works fine. FireWire works fine. Unless your daughter starts doing 96 track film score projects (in other words, HUGE project & audio files), the transfer rates of the various HD interfaces will be difficult to perceive with smaller projects. I personally use several-year-old plain old USB external MyBooks from Western Digital and they work just fine. I just used one to download my X3 upgrade to (multiple GBs), from my desktop computer, before copying it to my laptop computer for its unpack and install.

Man, that was so early on in my digiaudio "career" and I had so little experience with the unit that taking my advice was probably a real gamble (and in many ways my advice should still be taken with a grain of salt) but darned if that bugger didn't install in NO time and just immediately work. Like ZERO fiddling or screwing around. I installed it, pointed Sonar to it and have never even had to think about it once since (aside from adjusting the buffers if I started adding a million tracks to my project).

I'm just glad it worked out for you (well, both of us). I would have felt like an arse if you took my advice and it turned out to be a lemon. But really... it's just a solid rig and I didn't exactly walk into it blindly. I was getting suggestions tossed at me from everywhere and the Focusrite stuff was kind of a fluke. It got mentioned a couple times but everyone else was talking about the MOTUs and Fastracks and QCs or whatever and FR had JUST had some kind of driver issue the year before with Win7 (that they corrected almost immediately but the freakouts were still out there on the forums... including here) so it was a, as a total newb, a bit of a roll of the dice. BUT there were people everywhere signing the praises of the pres, stability and once you filtered out the noise from that little driver blip almost ALL of it was positive. Not a single other interface in that price bracket (and even most in the higher ranges) had such a good vibe and darnit... it all worked out amazingly.

Score one for the good guys. ;-)

Before you buy anything...

What about a mike? You didn't mention that you have one yet, nor did you say anything about budgeting for one.
Part of that £300 should definitely be earmarked for something like an SM-58 or an AT-2020.
If she starts gigging sometime down the road, the SM-58 (by Shure) will be suitable for taking on the road. I don't know about the new ones, but back in the day (as they say) you could bang in nails with those suckers. They wouldn't look great after that, but the sound was totally unaffected.

As for the AT-2020 (by Audio Technica) it's a studio mike and best left in that environment. It needs phantom power (+48 volts mentioned above).

Wow thanks guys for all your input. I haven't been on the forum in ages and I forgot how helpful everyone can be.

I'm going to have a look at the scarlets 2in2out for her. There is a package deal including mic, leads and stand for £198 from Anderton. I checked out the video for setting it up and it had a young girl singing and playing acoustic guitar which is exactly what maddie does.

I've got a USB 3port on the laptop and that's a great tip about a clean install for it.

Again thanks for the great replies everybody.

As far as dynamic mics the classic SM58 is... well a classic but I found the Beta57 is REALLY nice for clarity and higher end vocals (I used it for melodic/screecher stuff and would be great for live female vox I'm assuming) but still has all the durability and body of the 58 (which I found to be a little muddy/boomy in comparison). They are a little more expensive (last time I checked) but man I wish I had access to one again.

Good luck!    The Scarlett package deal looks like a good cost to performance ratio.

And it's kind of weird that you mentioned Maddie... which happens to be my daughter's (nick)name as well.

+1 FOR FOCUSRITE STUFF.
I BOUGHT A LIQUID 56 3 WEEKS AND THIS THING ROCKS.
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. STILL LEARNING HOW TO USE IT BUT I HAVE BEEN VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE SOUND QUALITY OF THE PREAMPS AND THEY ARE A BREEZE TO SET UP.
CHEERS.

Hi Anderton,

How is the low latency performance on the Tascam units? They look really cool, but low latency performance means everything for my workflow, lots of softsynths, etc. and fairly high track counts almost always.

I enjoy an Echo Gina3g unit on my main rig still which is PCI (not express) and of course the low latency performance is quite amazing.

I want to get a portable unit soon that will still yield good low latency performance. I know the Roland uits have been
quite successful with this.

WOW!!! IT COMES WITH Cubase LE. I assume that will be changing to SONAR X3 LE or something soon lol.

Thank You In Advance!

Lance

Wow thanks guys for all your input. I haven't been on the forum in ages and I forgot how helpful everyone can be.

I'm going to have a look at the scarlets 2in2out for her. There is a package deal including mic, leads and stand for £198 from Anderton. I checked out the video for setting it up and it had a young girl singing and playing acoustic guitar which is exactly what maddie does.

I've got a USB 3port on the laptop and that's a great tip about a clean install for it.

Again thanks for the great replies everybody.

Si

Be VERY careful that whatever audio interface you get can deal with being plugged into a USB 3 port, as some freak out unless they are plugged into a USB 2 port.  (assuming you get a USB interface).

I have USB 3 ports on my current desktop, but use USB 2 ports for my Presonus AudioBox 1818 VSL .

Beepster
I found the Beta57 is REALLY nice for clarity and higher end vocals

Thanks, Beepster. I'll have to put that on my list of things to get eventually. I hadn't looked at the Beta57 until clicking on your link, so I was surprised to see it has a steel mesh over the business end, unlike the classic SM-57. The classic always made me nervous without the steel mesh, so I always went with the '58.

We got a TASCAM US-366 sent to Boston and we love it. This will be our interface at the NAMM show that shows off SONAR X3.

Anyone use the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6?  I'm looking at it ready to pull the trigger.  It has 6 inputs and midi io, at about $200 bean its hard to beat!!   I wish the Tascam and Focusrite guys carried midi on there sub $200 units.  Its a deal breaker.

Best Regards,
Ken

That would be tempting if it had midi i/0.

The Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 has MIDI....at $199...JRRShop has it for like $170 or so...

I just sold my Quad Capture, which, in it's price range, is an exceptional interface, and bought
a Focusrite Forte.  Got it NEW for $300 on Black Friday...woohoo...gotta say...WOW...
amazing piece of kit.

Bottom line...get what works best for you and your needs...the beauty is you've usually got 30 days to figure
out if it's what you want, and like it.  If not, take it back, and try something else....repeat till you find what you
want...

Cheers!

BTW...I had the Audio Kontrol 1 when it first came out, and it was nice...so, with the added improvements,
I'm sure the 6 does a good job.
