amateur post

I like Sonar X1 quite a bit...there are so many things I haven't figured out yet though. My song isn't 'hot' or modern or cutting edge but here it is: http://soundcloud.com/mar...ham/the-last-we-danced I appreciate any input about the recording/mix.

Sounds nice Mark.

It has a nice singer songwriter groove to it.

What a cool song! and a very good performance.  You've got a lot of wonderful layers going on here.  Is this an original tune or a cover?

Don't change anything based on my opinions until you get a couple of more suggestions, but -
You might want to mute everything except the bass and the drums and work on getting them to have a little more punch.  Then add the other instruments/vocals back in one at a time and match them to the percussion/bass.

The lead vocals could use a little cut at around 2K or so to smooth out a little of the brightness.  I think the top end of the accoustic guitar is a little bright - not so much at the beginning, but later on in the song.  It probably sounds real good solo'd but it seems a bit bright in the mix (particularly against the organ).

Please don't change it until you get more opinions, but that is my two cents worth.

Great job!

Very nice song.  I was reminded of The Band, but this is more contemporary.  My only suggestion would be to punch up the bass a bit more; I felt a lack of bottom end.  Otherwise, you're on the right track.

All the best,
Lynn

interesting - quite different!

the piano panned all the way left is very unnatural as is the organ all the way right.  the piano also sounds very harsh and brittle.

the guitar sounds really nice.  the vocals have a nice "melodic" quality in places.

Wow. Thank you. All great comments.

Yes Glen, it's an original. I struggle with the 'harshness' but never quite know how to cut. And the acoustic guitar is something I that's tough to record. I always want it to sound like "I'm Only Sleeping" but it never does.

Thanks Lynn. Yes, you nailed it...it's a Band ripoff. And the low end is something, well, I wanted to have no bass at all just to hear how it would be. But I ended up putting one on and used the free Guitar Rig plugin and used the 'airy vocal' setting. Guess that cuts down the bottom end.

Reece, that's true. I did go for that unnatural 1968 panning and really thin piano. I'm actually pleased you noticed.

Thanks everyone. This is a cool place to bring music. I didn't realize.

Not everything has to be hot and cutting edge. A good song shines through. This one did. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds great Mark

The mix is perfect - really clear all across the range.

Well recorded too.

Great stuff!
