ambient film music meets rock 'n roll

Howdy All,

Just finished a song that's quite different from my previous postings.

I wanted to write something unique & cinematic, so I started with "atmospheric" soundtrack elements and layered in some rock guitar riffs for an edgy, modern vibe. It's an unusual combo -- but as you know, I love tinkering with genres!

I'd sincerely appreciate comments & critique on this new composition...thanks so much!

Cheers,
steve-o :-)

    Hey steve-o,
excellent track, great atmosphere and you got the pacing just right on this piece.
Sounds absolutely wonderful and the only thing i'd change is to soak that thunder type sound in an enormous reverb as it almost sounded like an unintentional distortion artifact.
    Cool stuff.

Great tune, it was fun to sit back and let it evolve at its on pace. Like the break down 1:45, really brought it down and it worked. The vocals at 2:40 don't quite have a fast enough attack to give the pulsing sound I think you where going for, but what are you going to do, hire the Mormon Tabernacle Choir?

I bet some of the guitar jockeys where waiting for a wailing guitar solo in there, but I liked your use of restraint (not that a wailing guitar solo wouldn't have worked as well).

    Hey Mario & Ed,

Thanks for the feedback -- much appreciated!

A quick question -- are the guitars situated okay in the mix? At first I had them way up front, but it sounded too intense and "busy", so I decided to move the guitar riffs further back in the mix. Hopefully everything is clearly defined?

Anyways, thanks again -- and I WILL soak that thunder in some reverb!

    cheers,
    steve-o :-)

    Steve-o,

Outstanding stuff. Nice buildups and changes, great textures. Guitars seem well placed to me, strong, full, but not overbearing. Very nice.

Hey Steve-O, I loved this! What an excellent track, really made me smile when the guitar riffs came in, that was just perfect.

I like the choir sounds, your groove sounds great, and the whole mix is spot-on.

Yeah Steve, I really dig this! Excellent!
I love the drum/percussion loops. Chimes sound great with the panning left to right... nice touch. Cymbal washes are nice, I wish they would have a little more decay. Yeah, I love the guitar riff when it comes in... adds a very cool dimension to the song. The break is very cool... the panning of the various instruments is awesome, very well placed. I think the pulsing quarter note choral voices should build in dynamics and become huge at the break (personal preference, of course). I like Nick's suggestion of making the thunder larger with reverb. Superb stuff, I hope to hear this in a movie soundtrack soon!

    Hey Michael,

Thanks for your comments and suggestions, and I'm glad you liked the song!

I really enjoy writing in the ambient/cinematic genre -- so much freedom to use a broad musical palette. And regarding a movie soundtrack...I can only hope!

great moody feel to this, enhanced by the brooding vox. Guitars sit very nicely in the mix, bringing them forward would detract. I can see our protagonist going into the heart of the Amazon while eyes watch from shore, hidden.

Wow, this was great to listen too. So much I liked, the percussions, the vocal harmony, the guitar, the way this song breaths, the overall vibe. Great job.

The only thing I'd change would be the chimes at 3:16 and after, I didn't think that sound fit with the vibe. But I see you got a positive comment on that so chalk it up to subjective differences of opinion. It's a really small nit I admit.

What are those bongo or conga like percussion sounds that are up front around 2:13? I really liked that part - the sound, the rhythm, and the panning.

    Too awesome.

EDIT: What Nick said about the thunder. I didn't hear it the first time around, probably because it wasn't soaked in an enormous reverb.
