amp sim and alias factor missing, sorta - Plug-in Manager bonked?

so i have amp sim and alias factor in a project (too old school i know). opened a diff proj and tried to insert, they don't show up in the plug-in mgr. i notice that there is no "default" layout, but whatever layout was last used loads.

amp sim and alias factor are in the shared plugins folder, and it is part of the scanning tree.

i can drag&drop either to another open proj, but they are unavailable from the list.

am i having a senior moment, or is something funny?

thanks.

Are you saying the "Default All Plug-ins" layout is not available in the layout options or in the Plug-in Manager layout editor. I have never read about the "Default All Plug-ins" layout going missing from the layout options at the top of the plug-in menus and the down arrow in the plug-in tab in the browser. Because the "Default All Plug-ins" layout is built on the fly, it is not available in the Plug-in Manager layout editor.

no, that's still an option, but it doesn't bring back amp sim & alias.

Maybe try a custom install of X3 and select only Amp Sim and Alias Factor? You can also try the reset/reset scan ritual and maybe they'll show up.

Amp Sim doesn't install by default, although Alias Factor does so I'm not sure why just those two are being errant.

The amp sim and alias factor are old DX plug-ins. If a project currently has the plug-ins referenced in it and the project does not complain when opened, the plug-ins are installed. I don't believe resetting the VST inventory and recanning the VST plug-ins is going to make a difference to the DX plug-ins. Check for excluded DX plug-ins in the plug-in manager. May also see if running as administrator makes a difference.

BTW, I noticed in the original post the "shared plugins folder...is part of the scanning tree." If this means the "Shared Plugins" folder was added to the VST scan path, this is wrong. DX plug-ins do not get scanned by the VSTscanner. If VST plug-ins were added to the "Shared Plugins" directory, this is not a good idea. The DX and VST plug-ins should not be mixed.

I was going to suggest that too, but he can drag the plug-ins into a project so it has to be in the list somewhere.

[Edit] although...it seems he's not dragging in from the browser, but dragging from one open project into another open project?

i added the shared plugins folder to the path, didn't make them available, either did copying them to the root vst folder. i'll remove both.

did the rescan thing multiple times. i'll try to reinstall just them tomorrow. thanks.

Adding the DX plug-in paths to the VST scan path or copying DX plug-ins from their install location does nothing good.

DX plug-ins are added to the registry during the install process by executing regsvr32 dllname. This is a completely separate process from the VSTscanner which maintains the VST Inventory in the registry for VST plug-ins.

The plug-ins must be installed correctly or projects which currently reference the plug-ins would complain when opened.

The plug-ins are not in the "DirectX Audio Effects (DX)" "Registered Plug-ins Column" when the "Show Included", "Show Excluded" or "Show Excluded" w/ "Show Permanently excluded" options selected?

they do not show up on any of the lists, but play in projects that have them...

i'll try to install just them from the x3 install...

You might try registering them first, per scook's suggestion (if you know the path for them). Here's an article on how to register DX plug-ins. It's written around Vista, but Windows 7 works the same way.

I suggested re-installing just the plug-ins because hopefully Sonar would know where to put them and how to make them active.

I guess running SONAR as administrator made no difference either.

Before re-installing, I would unregister and move the the binaries out of the "Shared Plugins" folder. Not that anything I have suggested has helped so far. Unregistering may require being the administrator.

I will say anyone using the ancient Amp Sim and Alias Factor in projects is making music I probably want to hear

When scook gives up, there is no remaining hope for mere mortals to solve the problem. I agree - call tech support.
