an old tune and a microphone test

Here's test run of an old tune that I threw down yesterday to see what my brand new Wunder CM7 FET microphone sounded like in a torture test... me singing :-)

I was able to pull off some cheap tricks, but when I tried to go low I had to fake it a bit because I was out of breath. :-)

I downloaded a MIDI clip off the net and stripped it down to Bass and Drums as a scratch track.

I set the tempo to 84bpm cause I like the number 84.

I tracked the vocal with a IK Plate Reverb in the monitor return... maybe a touch too heavy... maybe not.

After singing I added a Sonitus FX compressor.

No EQ... I'd use some, some where, I imagine, but for this track I really just wanted to hear the mic.

If I was using the track for anything but testing I'd probably run it through Melodyne... because it's 2011 after all.

I think I like this mic.

best regards,
mke

The mic sounds great. It seemed to have a great warmth to it.

I tested it against one my TLM103 mics. With the reverb it's hard to prefer one over the other I keep failing the ABX test.

Without reverb the Wunder CM7 sounds much smoother and it seems capable of taking a growl and handling it with grace.

I've always read that the TLM series got a little grainy when pushed... I bought a pair of 103s a few years ago anyway... but now it's really obvious when you compare it to something based on the pre TLM design.

I may prepare a pair of .wav for comparison. As I say, when I mixed in the reverb I had a really hard time with a ABX test. I would get my first 2 answers correct and then lose my capability to ID which is which. It was weird, I could get it right the first time every time but I couldn't prove, statistically with a ABX test, that I could really tell the difference. Which I guess is how Neumann justifies the TLM design despite numerous requests for the old style circuits.

    best regards,
    mike

Thanks for that link. The Song and performance are really nice.

His voice seems to have a tonality that seems familiar to me. The guitar playing and the ultra hip drumming have got it going on... it sure would be fun to try to sing to a tune like that.

The funny thing about buying the new CM7 FET.... I still want a BlueBird too.

    :-)

    Thanks for listening!

    best regards,
    mike

I wish I could torture people like that.

Mic sounds very warm and smooth.

You don't need Melodyne, I think just a few takes would be more than enough.  Sounds pretty good.  I would keep the mic.

mic sounded great as did the overall testing...is this @ the 2k price point? cuz i'd need to do an "Apples vs Apples" testing to get a true sense of what the mic can do....

when I was shopping for a mic I noticed the rule of "diminisng returns" kicked in around the $500 mark (for my ears and for the music I was working on)..ultimately I ended up grabbing a used Shure KSM32  which seemed to compete well with mic's at the 2k price point and could be had (used)for a 7th of the cost....again if price isn't an issue then i'd have a locker fulla jems like this...

great sounding mic to be sure!!
