another pops and clicks thread. any thoughts? ;)
hi folks, i've got the following setup that pops and clicks during playback/shuttle/loop, feeling like i've tried everything, would much appreciate any fresh thoughts :) computer: sonar x1 studio windows 7 64-bit 6gb ram dual core intel @ 2400 audio interface: mackie onyx 1620i (firewire) stuff i've tried: latest driver for audio interface (dated late 2010) all driver modes for audio interface (asio, wdm, mme) all buffer sizes up to 2048 (max) for audio interface all buffer sizes up to 2048 (max) for hard drive record/playback buffer ran latency profiler tool, all green (under 120) disabled network adapter in bios disabled unnecessary windows services turned off win7 core parking (though it shouldn't effect dual core anyway) fixed the page file size to 1.5x ram verified there are no IRQ conflicts with the firewire everything is running great except for the pops and clicks (and the occasional mini-screech ;)) thanks!

One thing you may have overlooked when listing your specs, what type of firewire controller do you have, is it Texas Instruments (TI) or something else. Most firewire interfaces perform much better with a TI chip.

station hi folks, i've got the following setup that pops and clicks during playback/shuttle/loop, feeling like i've tried everything, would much appreciate any fresh thoughts :) thanks! Some "old" thoughts are... Check your interface requirements: WDM or ASIO and select it under "Edit - Preferences - Audio - Playback and Recording"! For WDM 1. Run the Wave Profiler under "Edit - Preferences - Audio - Driver Settings"! 2. Select a buffer size and "Apply" it one notch at a time through the entire range. I'd start near the middle and work either way. 3. If nothing works try ASIO4all.dll, a free download. FOr ASIO 1. Open the ASIO panel button under "Edit - Preferences - Audio - Driver Settings" and play with the settings. Steve

thanks for the lead LRL!, i'm using the onboard firewire from VIA. guess i should try a pci firewire card with a TI chipset? a lot of them seem to be discontinued. anybody have an active link to an affordable card they've had luck with? thanks steve, yea i tried many buffer settings in WDM mode, in asio mode, the driver has 7 fixed buffer settings up to 2048, i tried them all. haven't looked into asio4all yet, it may come to that, but i'm hoping to get results with the manufacturer driver as many people are using it without issues.

Yea, onboard firewire chips are less than favorable. Sometimes they can work and sometimes they will not. You can also check for IRQ conflicts, as your symptoms are inline with these conflicts. CJ

thanks CJ, the machine has a couple IRQ conflicts, but no conflicts with the firewire controller. could that still be an issue? also tried legacy driver for firewire, no change, think i will buy a TI chip pci firewire card today...

Do you have your onboard sound enabled? If I do Sonar defaults to using it for the timing master and no matter how I set it in the options it will not use my MOTU. If the MOTU is not the timing master I get all sorts of pops and clicks. Try diabling all sound cards except for your mackie.

Just a thought, Are the noises visible on the sound wave in track view when you zoom in on it a little bit? If so, Are they on just one track here and there or straight down all tracks in the same place?

Since you've gotten the TI chipset and are still experiencing problems I would contact Cakewalk tech support. Sorry you're having problems. Regards,

Do you have a separate physical hard drive dedicated to audio data?

Take a walk on the wild side and set 'Sonar.exe' to 'realtime' priority in windows task manager on startup!!
