(answered) Tap Tempo
Is there any way to set the metronome speed in a project using tap tempo from a midi controller?

John I'm curious. What MIDI controller has tap tempo? Some workstations have tap tempo but I'm at a loss trying to think of a controller that does.

If you have Benstat's Sonar Plus installed, you can use your qwerty keyboard or mouse for tap tempo to set the metronome.

What MIDI controller has tap tempo? He means to tap the tempo from the keyboard, instead of with the mouse. I would prefer this, too. The way I like to set the tempo now is to record 4-8 bars at the tempo I've been playing it naturally, without a click, slide the clip back to 1:01:000, and then use Set Measure/Beat At Now to set a downbeat near the end of the clip. Delete the test clip, and you're ready to go.

http://asseca.com/soma/index.html This has been my complaint for years until I found this plug-in. It was in beta since 2006 but it works great, except for host tempo update feature. I have this plugin at the top of my softsynth list and I drag it over at any time, hit my keys on my controller and it tell you immediately what the tempo is. The plug-in has the option for average tempo as you tap or immediate. As brundlefly suggests, and simularly this is how I work, I record a couple of bars first to no click, then I drag the plug-in over to the project, then I just tap along to the project and look at what the tempo is for the plug-in. Press Undo and the plug-in is gone, then I use the keybinding to change the tempo. Delete the free-played clip and you're ready, all this can be done very quickly. by the way the plug-in is Soma's taptempo alpha

@Lynn If Benstat's add on makes accessing tap tempo simple again like it used to be in S8, I'm going to download it asap. Thanks for the heads up.

well the only problem I see with plugins of unknown origin is their stability and influence on Sonar crushing experience....

At this point in time, Benstat's Sonar Plus has been a Godsend for those users looking for some of the lost functionality of S8.5. I've used it since the beginning, and it has never crashed my program. Ben says he will soon update it for X1c, so you may wait a week or two, but I endorse it.

If Benstat's add on makes accessing tap tempo simple again like it used to be in S8, I'm going to download it asap. X1's Insert Tempo dialog (F12) still has a Tap Tempo button.

You can also use Project / Insert tempo change which has a tap button. Just tap the button and see what the tempo is and hit Cancel. I also wish there was a tap tempo feature but instead, I use this work around.

Yes, this is the same button for which Benstat has created an icon. One less click.

Thanks very much folks. I didn't know about F12, I'll check that out for sure.

Same here... I was missing the one click access to tap tempo function.... will look at F12 as an option. Cheers.

In a new project, I click to have the metronome on during playback. Before recording anything, push play and listen. Insert/replace new tempo - Usually get what I need with no more than a few tries. Once in awhile I've tried tap tempo again and I've never gotten it to work right. Tempo jumps all around - probably the funkiness of using a mouse to do it. But I only spend a few seconds getting the tempo I need, so I don't need more options I guess. RB

I use Bome's midi translator where I created a tap tempo script that spits out midi timecode at whatever tempo you are conducting. I used a wii-mote to conduct the tempo with. It's very fun! You can use another midi recorder to record your conducting. :) I think finale has tap tempo conducting where it records your conducting to the tempo map...don't quote me, but I think I read that. I've put in for it for Sonar several times, but they don't even have time to fix a broken timecode clock, much less add any features.
