any software to create / edit INS files? or anyone can help?
It's me again ;) ____________________________ Need some help in editing INS files - one of programs exports INS files, but when I import them to Sonar, I have two sets - programs and combinations - not ONE SET. I know it's issue of this program, and I don't know how make "one definition" from these two. Do you know any editor or maybe you could help me in this issue? synths: Korg Triton Rack and Korg Trinity Rack

Any text editor will do. Open any .ins file as text and you'll get the idea. It is not difficult, just a bit tedious. I've done this for all my synths, including my expanded Emu MP7, that has over 2,000 presets. Mostly a matter of cut/paste and formatting text.

+1 on the above, notepad will do. If you open an existing INS file you can work out the formatting.

ok, I have INS file, but when importing to SOnar, Sonar sees TWO "banks" inside. One is for combination sounds, second for "single" sounds.... so I can't apply both to the same MIDI OUTPUT.... Instruments has SINGLE and COMBINATION modes....

You need to work out the bank change number to send and then enter that. See this post on how to do that. I'm guessing those modes are the equivalent of 'performance' & 'patch' on my Sonic Cell. That's for going the other way though so it's just a reverse of that.

I realise that the link may confuse more than help, so........ Look at your MIDI implimentation for the Korg, each bank change will require a cc#0 MSB and possibly a LSB as well. To work out the bank change number to enter into the ins file do the following MSB x 128 + LSB = Bank change number. Referring to the linked thread above for my Sonic Cell that would be 87*128+64 = 11200 Hope that helps.

There's a program on my website from back in Early Cakewalk days called INSMaker... I don't know if it will run on new systems and such but it's tiny and it's free if you'd like to try... It's at the very bottom of the page... http://www.dspacer.com/ht..akewalk___kurzweil.html Keni

Two banks is just what you need. Your Korg will be in either combination mode or program mode, according to how you set it up. If it is in combination mode, you would select a combi using the combi bank to send patch patch changes on the master or control channel you have configured on the Korg. In program mode, use the program bank. Some combis are multitimbral and allow you to select patches (from the program bank) on channels other than the control channel. In any case, the korg wouldn't know how to handle both combi changes and program changes on the same channel.

@ KENI - INSmaker works good, but not with TRINITY Rack - just with TRITON Rack. And there is still issue with COMBI and PROG.... For now I look for something for TRINITY. MidiQuest don't want to "shake hands" fully with Trinity, so I have to modify what I've got now.................................................................................................................................................................. @ bvideo - Two banks is what I need, but I NEED to have it in one INS - to switch between them in SONAR's MIDI TRACK, as I can do with others instruments. It's quite $#@$#@ for now, because I like to change sounds - from simple to complex, and with this INS I have - I cant to do it - well, I can, but every time I want to change sound from (like in FBB's Roland) Patch to Performance, I have to go to Preferences / Instruments and change settings..... :-/

Hi there. You can do that from the instrument assignment section in preferences, although possible via a text editor as well it'll be easier for me to explain how using the ins facility in X1. I'm assuming you already have an ins file that you just need to edit. - Open Preferences->MIDI->Instruments
- In the left window assign the port you want to the existing ins file then click define
- In the left hand window open up the tree for your ins file
- Then open the tree for "Patch names for banks" you should see the existing bank files for various patches.
- Right click on one of them (closest in set up to the bank you are defining) and select "New patch names" or if "Edit" if editing.
- Change the bank change number to the bank change required by your Korg, entered as a decimal number, see my earlier post for working that out, and a name that makes sense to you. For example "11200 = My Korg Multiple SOunds"
- Now you can define the actual patch names in the "Note names for patches" list if they don't already exist which if they are your own unique patches or multis obviously won't.
- Close your way out and make sure the port your Korg is on is assigned to the definition and then from the MIDI tracks you should be able to select the multi and patches as required.
The important thing is getting the decimal bank change numbers correct. Hope that helps.

If you want to PM me, I can give you an email address to send an ins file to, all I'd need then would be the MSB & LSB numbers for the various korg banks. I'll certainly start it off for you, can't promise I'll be filling in all however many thousand patch names there are though.

OK, thanks, PM you later - I don't think it will be as complicated and time-consuming.

adrian4u @ bvideo - Two banks is what I need, but I NEED to have it in one INS - to switch between them in SONAR's MIDI TRACK, as I can do with others instruments. :-/ I understand now. To make your two instruments into a single instrument, it is a matter of creating a few lines (or adding a line to one of the existing Korg instruments) near the bottom of the file to make an instrument that references both patch lists. [Korg Triton] Patch[0]=Korg Triton Program bank Patch[1536]=Korg Triton Combi Bank ... The number 1536 may not be the right number for your bank select. In fact, you will need to determine whether bank select actually works to switch your instrument between combi and program mode. Also, there may be some other lines created by your software (e.g. BankSelMethod, Drum, Key, Control, NRPN) that you should preserve. I used names like "Korg Triton Program Bank" as placeholders for the names your software actually created. [edit] If your software made several patch lists, combine them all. If the two different patch lists use the same bank numbers, you are screwed, and that's why the software made two different instruments. Bill B.
