audio automation read ignored

Sonar X3 ignores my automation recordings unless I have the "W" highlighted. It will record the volume changes nicely, but will not respond to the volume changes unless the "W" button is still highlighted. The "R" button is highlighted n both cases.
Even Sonar X3 Power is no help.
Does someone on this intelligent Forum have an idea I can try?
