audio driver troubles - sonar 2 and saffire pro24dsp
My sonar2 essential is suddenly not recognizing my saffire pro 24 dsp. It was all working great for several weeks since initial installation- then I fired up Sonar2 today and it was only recognizing the integrated realtek device. Here is what I see: 1) In Sonar2 audio preferences - the saffire channels are all greyed out - and cannot be selected. The Realtek is selected. 2) In win7 control panel - the saffire is selected as default audio for recording and playback 3) Under saffire mix control - it recognizes sound (and I hear all inputs) - and indicates everything is good. 4) In sonar 2 midi preferences ... it recognizes the saffire midi! Any suggestions? IW

Have you tried rebooting? That sort of thing has happened tome before, and rebooting fixed it forme. Just a thought, Bob Bone

If you're in ASIO mode try clicking the pulldown (in Sonar audio preferences) that shows the Realtek & selecting the Saffire. ASIO lets you have only 1 interface selected at a time. edit to add: or try deselecting the Realtek ports & then selecting the Saffire ones.

+1 on Ducatibruce2's suggestion. Deselect the Realtek interface, and it might open up the Saffire for you. Bob Bone

Try using System Restore to take it back a day or two. I find best results when using it in safe mode (Press F8 during bootup).

OK - I'm really struggling after playing with this for 2 hours - and no success. Here is what I tried: 1) I tried the pull down in the driver setting and no luck - only the realtek or none. So I tried "none" and apply - but it kept reverting back to the realtek. 2) So - I did a system restore to about 10 days ago. Well - that was before I installed sonar2 essential. So - I reinstalled sonar2 essential. 3) Well - I'm not sure I'm any better off. According to focusrite - I should be able to select ASIO Saffire (8in 4 out) in the record latency pull down. Well - it is there from the pulldown... but it ALWAYS reverts back to generic low latency asio driver speakers (saffire audio1). So - now under audio input drivers I have a generic low latency ASIO driver microphone saffire. After that I have all the saffire pro input drivers all greyed out that I used to have and expect. Under output drivers I have similar nonsense (the single generic driver ...and then the greyed out saffire outputs. Basically - Sonar now treats my focusrite saffire pro 24 dsp as a single input and single output with no other option for input/output flexibility. Yes - I have the latest drivers and saffire mix control 3.0 This is pretty discouraging. To be honest - I'm not sure how to uninstall and re-install all the saffire drivers to try and start from scratch. From the control panel it says I have the 3/36/2012 4.0.0.13485 driver version etc. IW

I also use the Saffire pro24dsp... still on old drivers... and no trouble here... will keep my fingers crossed. Have you tried going back to X1 or 8.5? Seems this would tell you if it's the saffire or an X2 issue....

I know you listed some things in the original post, but you have done a system restore, and I am not sure how things are currently set on your system. 1. What is current driver mode set to in Sonar? 2. Are interface drivers installed in Wind 7? What specific version? 3. What is default audio device for your system set to for Windows? 4. Have you tried going into Device Manager and disabling the Realtek audio? 5. Does Device Manager show your interface under Sound, Video, and Game controllers? Does it show as working properly? 6. Have you checked on Firewire compatibility issues between your computer's Firewire chipset and your interface? (run OHCITool.exe from Focusrite: http://www.focusrite.com/...r/attachments/OHCI.zip ) Please review and respond to all of the above. It will help us to help you, Bob Bone

In your 1st post you mention the Saffire is set to default audio & recording in Win7's control panel - has it always been set to that? I'd try setting the Win7 default to the Realtek - it may be locking the Saffire driver so Sonar can't access it. I'm not familiar with Win7 but I think it's worth a try.

Thanks for the help. It seems like it is working now - after full re-install of FSP24dsp mix control Version3 (latest) and full re-install of Sonar 2. I may not have helped myself when working the preferences/audio/devices/input drivers/output drivers window. I needed to unselect the one to reselect the other driver options. Oops. I didn't have this trouble when I first installed Sonar 2 about 10 days ago. I've clicked on so many things now that I'm not sure if it was me ... or Sonar. Whatever it was ... in my mind I was stuck on the realtek drivers. Sooo... In summary I did system restore, re-installed saffire mix control, re-installed sonar 2 times. After the system restore/reinstall - I was "stuck" on an ASIO generic driver as a single input and output (all the proper saffire drivers were below it and greyed out). In total frustration I re-installed the FSP24dsp drivers and Sonar again. After the second Sonar full install - I stumbled across the feature that I had to unselect the generic ASIO driver before I could select the greyed out saffire drivers. In the end - it looks like it is working now. What helped throw me off - and still does is the preferences/audio/sync and caching/record latency device - which for me shows generic low latency ASIO driver (1 in 1 out). In the pull down it has ASIO Saffire (8 in, 4 out). I thought I was supposed to select it. However - when I do ... and hit "apply" ... it always reverts back to the generic low latency ASIO driver. I thought this was messing things up. Is it? Thanks for the help. This has taken most of the night ... and I gotta go back to my income earning work. thanks IW

I would disable the Realtek completely. I think Windows is getting confused. Regards, Dan
