automating effects
hi everyone, finally a musical question!! this is what i want to do. i have a clip in a solo that i want to add reverb or delay i haven't decided which one yet. however, i want the effect to start at one point then end. when i try and use "add effect" there is a volume drop at the beginning of the clip. what i want to do is manually write the effect while the track is playing then turn it off at the end of the clip. just like if i want to pan or change volume. also, whats the difference between "add effect" and "process effect"? thank you all so much.

The best way to achieve this in my opinion is to throw a delay/reverb on a bus and automate the send knob. This method is non destructive unlike process effect which is destructive an non reversible.

hi everyone, thanks for your advice about automating an effect on a clip. i need to be more specific. i have a verse where on the verse i want a guitar play something on top of whats going on. i'll give an example. on the "rise and fall of ziggy stardust" there is a song called "moonage daydream". towards the end of the song, mick ronson plays a one note solo that the delay/reverb really open up (my word). i don't want to set up an amp and punch in the part because i want to control how much of the FX is heard. what was suggested was, making a bus and sending the clip there then automate it. please forgive me, i have no idea how to do that. if someone would be so kind to take the time to help a technically challenged guitar player do that? i would be most grateful and if you're anywhere near Chicago i'll buy you lunch. thanks so much. jp

1- Create a bus and call it reverb, delay or Jose. It doesn't matter 2- Put the FX in that buses FX bin 3- go to the guitar track you want the delay, reverb or Jose on and click on the plus sign to add a send. 4- Where does the send go ? The Delay, reverb Jose bus. *While the guitar part is playing move that send up and down to get a fell for what a send actually does. Its sending partial/full signal to the FX unlike an FX bin that's routed through the signal. 5- Automate the send control that feeds the FX bus and go eat a pizza.

What Chuck is telling you is the easiest way to do this.
As a guitar player, I would suggest you put reverb and delay in the FX bin of the newly.created buss and try them both. I know the FX your talking about (love that song btw) and you may get better results throwing in some of both. Also try to arrange the reverb first, then the delay. And then try it the other way. Also use the mix knob to adjust varying amounts. You can automate all parameters in either FX.
Just try it! You will likely spend hours in a daze amazed at what you can create with just those two FX!

The bus/send method is very similar to what we used to do on the analog desks. On the old Mackie 32-8's I used to patch a reverb or delay in to the FX send and loop it through the stereo returns. This would give a mono guitar track a "stereo like signal". Perfect for ping pong delay or spectrum spreading. To break it down in newbie terms: What a send does essentially is it takes the wet signal (The FX) and mixes it with the Dry signal. The send knob adjusts how much of the wet signal (FX) you are hearing. Using a tracks FX bin is different in that the whole signal passes through the FX and is varied by the input control of the Reverb or Delay unit (VST) itself. More often than not when using a send you want your Wet to be at 100% but I have found uses for lower percentages as sometimes 100 can be over bearing even when the send knob is at lower settings. This is because each plug ins dry/wet control is different and react different.

One thing I would add is maybe using an aux track instead of a bus. Same process but you can have the effect track right beside your original track

But that's not how you would use a bus in this instance. You don't send the track output to the bus, you create a separate send to the bus. That way both the Track Output and the bus output are routed to the master bus. EDITED TO ADD THIS:

interesting idea. I have to explore aux and patch points a little more. I use buses for groups of tracks like guitars, drums bas, exc. Those tracks are all sent to a Guitar bus, a Drum bus, a Bass bus. And I have FX buses as well. like a Delay bus, reverb bus. I hardly if ever send my straight tracks to the master, they are first sent to buses with bus compression, then they go to the master. Interesting ideas though. I like it.

See, I would still use buses like that, but, in this example, I would probably send both the original guitar track and the aux track to my guitar bus.

thanks so much, however, i'm having computer problems, the same error messages are showing up when i try and open sonar. after hours on the phone with geek squad and sweetwater i decided to uninstall/reinstall sonar and so far today it seems to be working. the errors i'm getting we discussed last week if you want to take a look. This kind of stuff makes me nuts. a tech at Sweetwater turned me on to a free disk checking thing that will (should) tell if there are any problems with the hard drive. so at least if i need to bring the computer to get repaired i will (at least) be armed with a little knowledge because, for me, it's like bringing the car to a mechanic, they can tell me anything and i have no idea what they're talking about. i could have a tractor motor and not know it.

I appreciate questions like this, for the answers and possibilities, I would have probably just created a new track with that clip part in it, and applied the FX's I wanted to it, mixing in with fader and pan. Cheers
