..... avian squatters
If you look close you will see the dove living in this hanging basket. It stays in there most of the time.  Yet another squatter a robin who decided to build under the porch.  These guys are moving in on me here!

Haha I reported on another thread a stock dove had moved in here. Turns out he just wanted some company for a couple of days while he recovered from a nasty bout of indigestion. He's 'been' and gone now...

Yeah Ive never seen one live in a hanging basket before....kind of like a bird hammock. I like having it around. Not sure if he has indigestion like yours did though. I guess if the flowers die I'll know.

No, trust me the flowers will thrive on the extra nourishment...  Our guy left behind a pile which would have looked proud next to anything you could have cleared from a stable...

We found a hummingbird nest right under our back deck awning....plus a swallow nest in our garage...

Humming birds!! I love hummingbirds. We are only lucky enough to see one or two zipping around here but never any nests here yet. I managed to snap a picture of one last year but am not sure where I put it.

My mom had a couple of house finches build a nest in one of her hanging flower baskets. I'm sure they didn't appreciate it, but I'd peek in every once in a while to see mama sitting on the nest (and trying not to move).

Are they what we call house sparrows ( Passer domesticus)?  Update: The Herring Gulls nesting on our roof became parents of two chicks this weekend. They look cute now and I'll try and get pictures, but I'm sure I'm going to be swearing at them in 6 months time.

 These little fellows are seen all over up here...these are house finches... @starise...I've been trying to get a good photo of the hummingbirds around here for years...do you think that I can get one that works? Noooooooooo...

Nice pics guys. Hope you are able to take the pics you are after. I love to sit,watch and listen to the birds....craig I thought that birds building a nest in a hanging basket was not commonplace. It must be more common than I thought.
I usually use my iphone to take pics. I should get my wifes camera for some of this as I would get better pictures. With all of the storms we might be getting some different birds here. I would love to get some bat pics when they come out at dusk.

Very cool....
I was clearing some vines and bushes from a fence a few weeks ago and discovered 2 nests with birds in attendance. I decided to let them hatch out and fly away before continuing my destruction of their habitat. One was a dove. Checked last week and they are all gone so.................. the habitat and nests are gone now.... there were actually 4 nests in the foliage.
On hanging baskets, yeah, we have them every year and it is very common for a smaller species of bird to make a nest and raise a brood of young in the flowers. Once we know they are there, we water the flowers a bit more carefully and try to give them their space, until they are up and gone.
