best partition software

I have a brand new 320GB hard drive loaded with a OEM Toshiba Win 7 64bit OS.

I just loaded Acronis True Image and now I want to make a backup of the original install and then start stripping the bloat off this sucker.

I want to partition the hard drive so that I have logical partition D: in addition to the C; partition.

I have a boxed copy of Norton Partition Magic v8.0... is that suitable for the latest Windows etc?

Are there newer friendlier partition tools?

Isn't the point of Acronis to have a separate HD with all your stuff on it, in case C: drive fails?  Just curious...I haven't done this yet, but plan to.  Or maybe I'm missing the point.  Which has happened once or twice before...

both free downloads, they are ISO's so you have to get burner software xpburner / iso burner will do

I bought acronis disk director and it was a pile of junk for me.. wrongly formated a vista drive and wouldn't recover.... oddly when I questioned their 30 day guarentee they didn't do it...

so sod em , gparted is nice.. you can also run it off a pendrive =)

yer I use true image, but sod upgrading it till I have to.

Do you mean it can do so without destroying your data?

Well, I won't say that you can't destroy your data.  (Never underestimate the probability of things going wrong ...)
 
What I can tell you is that I recently use Disk Management to shrink my C drive to 150 GB and create a new partition in the empty space.  Similar thing on the other drive.  It was easy.
 
Personally, I'm not a fan of Acronis after all the problems it caused me a few months ago while trying to clone the drive in my laptop and replace it with a new one.  I ended up buying a copy of Spotmau and used it sucessfully.  Going forward, I'll use the built-in Disk Management first.  If I need to do something more sophisticated, I'll go to Spotmau.
 
If you want more opinions, I'd post this question in the Computer forum.  We're all about post count and food here.

Win 7's built-in Disk Management is fine for basic operations such as creating and re-sizing partitions.  Just shrink an existing partition and create a new partion  in the empty space.

Unless you are one of those folk who like constantly messing with their parts. so to speak then the built-in tool for Windows since Vista SP2 is perfectly adequate.

Heh, ok...  This one cracks me up a bit.  This guy is only on here as a spammer, yet he's promoting the exact software I use and can definitely recommend (plus the basic version is free).
