best screen capture software to make X1 tutorial videos??

So I'm thinking of doing a series of videos aimed at modern dance music producers, using only the the bundled effects, synths etc to build a track from scratch.

I've never even looked at screen capture software, any recommendations?

* Windows10 (x64), Focusrite Safire Pro24, Sonar Platinum (x64) * MacOS High Sierra, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9 *

The 'best' is probably Camtasia, certainly of all the ones I have used. Of course whether you want to spend that much is another matter. I have use both BSR which is good for the money, and CamStudio is for a freebie incredible.

The videos on my youtube site are all done in either CamStudio or BSR. None of my Camtasia ones have seen the light of day yet but they will at some point.

The advantages of Camtasia is that you don't have to worry so much about controlling the camera software at the same time as making the tutorial. Just about everything can be done in edit post recording. The time saved from that alone is worth the money as far as I'm concerned but add in some of the great callout options and it became a no-brainer for me.

There are demos for all of those available BTW.

A warning though, if you try Camtasia you are bound to want it.

    Sage advice buddy, thank you.
The quality of your videos are superb so I think I'll get stuck in and see if it works for me.

    Thanks! =)

let me ask you this brandon,i can use camtasia to record a mic in the mic slot but for some reason i can not get my V-studio 20 to record on the audio track,is there a way to get both.so one can do a voice over and still hear the audio of the track in x1?

    *UPDATE*

So the MME driver for my M-Audio 24/96 yields pretty useless latency results.
And as far as I can see there's no way to select a different driver in Camtasia.

    A little help please? =/
How have you guys got this set up?

    Thanks!

Mine just works, I don't recall setting drivers for it but there are options in the "Narration" set up. Or something like that, I'm away from my main system so can't rememeber exactly.

As far as I can tell, only selecting the MME driver in X1 will output a signal to be recorded in Camtasia as 'System sounds', which has been ticked to be recorded for obvious reasons.
All other driver options in X1 prevents Camtasia from doing this, including WDM/KS.

Needless to say the god awful MME driver latency is driving me bloody mad!!

You might need to route a cable from in to out (make a loop) on your audio device and set it up in Windows and Camtasia.

Here are some instructions pulled from an internal Cakewalk document (thanks Seth!) explaining how to get Camtasia to record using ASIO with a VS700R. Maybe it will be of some help and can be applied to your situation. Mainly it should help with the somewhat complex Windows routing required.

    Cabling
    1.       Connect a SPDIF cable from VS-700R SPDIF Out to VS-700R SPDIF In
    a.       Make sure direct monitoring is disabled for Digital 1 in Direct Mix

    Configuring SONAR
    2.       Set VS-700 ASIO latency to 6ms or higher
    3.       Enable Share Drivers With Other Programs
    4.       Open your SONAR project
    a.       Make sure all tracks and/ or busses feed to the Master Bus
    b.      On the Master Bus create a Send and rout it to VS-700 Digital1 (I have renamed my Digital1 in the driver’s Friendly Names to Camtasia)
    c.       Set this Send to PRE fader
    d.      NOTE: This will be the signal Camtasia receives from SONAR
    e.      Create a second Send on the Master Bus and rout it to the Main Out or Sub Out, whichever you do not have your monitors connected to (I have renamed my Main Out in the driver’s Friendly Names to Headphones)
    f.        Also set this Send to PRE fader
    g.       Mute the Master Bus (note that you will be monitoring SONAR from this Send)

    Configuring the VS-700R
    5.       Open the VS-700’s Mic Pre page and set the level as desired
    6.       Now open the Direct Mix tab
    7.       Turn up the fader for whichever channel your mic is plugged into

    8.       Route Direct Mix only out of the analogue output you do not have your monitors connected to (my monitors are routed off the Sub Outs so I have my Direct Mix routed to the Main Outs)

    Configuring Windows
    1.       Open Windows Control Panel and click on Sound
    2.       Click the Playback tab
    3.       Right-click on the VS-700’s output that you are using for your monitors (I use Sub) and choose Set as Default Device
    4.       Click the Recording tab
    5.       Right-click on VS-700’s Digital1 and choose Set as Default Device
    6.       Double click on Digital1
    7.       Click on the Listen tab
    8.       Check Listen to This Device
    9.       Under Playback through this device choose Default Playback Device
    10.   Click OK
    11.   Click OK again to exit the Sound panel

    Configuring Camtasia
    12.   Open Camtasia
    13.   Click Record the Screen
    14.   In the small Camtasia transport-like box in the bottom right corner of your screen click the small downward facing triangle next to the Audio On button to bring up the list of available recording devices
    15.   In the list of recording devices select 1-2 (4-VS-700) as your mic input
    16.   Make sure Record System Audio is checked
    17.   Click on Options to configure audio settings and capture settings (it defaults to 22khz Mono for some reason, but keeps the FPS setting)

FWIW the above technique with the VS-700r is only for recording voice over and system audio to separate tracks. You can record VO and system audio to a single track in Camtasia straight away. Also, interfaces with a 'loop back' function like the Octa-Capture, Tri-Capture, etc. allow you to print VO and system audio to separate tracks in Camtasia without any special setup.

Or, if you do your VO in Vegas after you've captured your video and system audio in Camtasi, like I do, you don't have to worry about this at all.

Brandon, Seth, thanks for the heads up, greatly appreciated =)

I recorded a test yesterday to see how stable the MME driver was, and while giving me high latency was actually pretty solid.
I definitely want to record the VO live to a separate track from the system audio, to be used as a guide for a higher quality VO post editing.
I kinda guessed a bit of re-wiring might be required, but no matter, thanks for the info.

Will post back later with (hopefully) some results.

Thank you so much guys!! =)

To the OP... thanks for bringing this up.  I too have been contemplating making some videos of project work and was wondering how I might go about and do it. This was very interesting and pertinent.  I wanted to show how things were done at mix down and explain the whys.....  Great stuff and THANKS again.
