blindLuck - mammal + guitar
Hi, I haven't been around lately either as a contributor or listener due health and/or work but things have settled down for this weekend, at least, so I managed to record a tune last night. This is an acoustic guitar version of a song I posted last year called blindLuck. There are some breathing sounds, especially towards the end but I just think of them as a sigh of relief that it's almost over blindLuck (acoustic version) As always, comments, questions and/or complaints are not only welcome but are encouraged! Thanks!

Hi Gary, sorry to read you had health problems, hope you're feeling better, sure sounds like it. This is guitar playing I like, excellent. Is the end a bit abrupt or is soundclick acting strange , it does that on occasion. Now hand over the particulars, please. Guitar make and model ,mics and number of fingers used, left and right . Greetings, Rik

Gary, Hope your health is now back on track. After listening, I have discovered that I have a problem where my guitar does not have all the notes available that yours seems to have. LOL Thanks for posting. It was a fun listen.

Wow I don't know which version I like best! You made my day! I love your style. Could you combine the 2? IMHO, I think you should use an acoustic version as an intro to the full version. At any rate I love it! Thanks for posting this!

Thanks very much, glad you liked it! bayoubill: Hi Bill. Thanks very much. I think using the acoustic as an intro for the full version is worth trying out...unfortunately I'm gonna be away from home for 2 months ( aargh...work ) but I'll definately look into it. Thanks again.

Very nice playing Gary. It reminds me of my dear departed uncle Horace. He had a lot of Chet influence. He played an early/mid 50s Les Paul Jr with flat wound strings through a Gretsch amp. I hear a lot of the same licks and I like it a lot. It is well produced too I think. Good job! Julien

Sorry if this has already been asked Gary, but a description of your tracking technique (signal chain) would really be appreciated. And need I say I am seriously impressed with the performance. I mean, really really nice. Sounds totally, insanely good on the speakers. Bravo!

You're such a confident player, strong forceful changes, no pulling punches. It speaks of a LOT of practice and a good ear. I'm always knocked out by playing and tastes in music. You're articulation here is sharp and clean. Great timing! Really fun stuff, Gary. A real treat. Daryl

thepogue: Hi Tom. I am feeling better. Thanks for the good wishes and thanks for listening and commenting. Glad you liked the tune. ohgrant: sounds more Ragtime than Blues to me. yep, I agree but Soundclick doesn’t have a Ragtime category…or do they? I’ve never actually checked Well, anyway thanks very much! rynosynth: I'd be squeezing some lemons if I had any haha… Thank you! jbow: It reminds me of my dear departed uncle Horace Thanks Julien, glad you liked the tune. Hopefully uncle Horace would like it, too. Whatever happened to the Les Paul and Gretsch amp? Worth a fortune these days…in memories or cash. Whichever you prefer. Alegria: Sounds totally, insanely good on the speakers Really? I’m sorta surprised to hear that ‘cause it sounds kinda weird to me. Distorted but not distorted or something. I just couldn’t figure it out. In my opinion you get a great acoustic sound but here’s the info: I have 2 AKG C1000 mics. One at the bridge and one at the 12 th fret ( more or less ). I don’t have a preamp so it’s just into the DAW from there. There is some delay, reverb and compression but the only eq is the usual high pass filter. Hope that helps. Thanks for listening and for the supportive comments. It’s always great to hear from you. Janet: you shouldn't be allowed to get sick or work so much I agree!!! Unfortunately, like most things, it’s out of my control. Thank you! darylcrowley: You're such a confident player Wow! Thanks Daryl. I’m glad it sounds that way ‘cause I generally don’t feel that way. It’s always great to hear from a musician with your talent and abilities. Thank you! 57Gregy: Hi Greg…Thank you! jamesyoyo: That was a like a fresh wash after the day at work I had today Hi James. Thanks very much, man. You made my day. RoberB: Hi Robert. I’m glad you liked the guitar sound but, as I mentioned to Alegria, I’m not really hearing it myself. Maybe it’s a good thing I’m away from home and unable to screw around with it and mess things up. The recording details ( such as they are ) are a few replies up. Thanks for listening for taking the time to leave a comment.

Glad that you are feeling better. Tell the man to lighten up and quit working you so hard --- although, I guess that these are not the times to be doing that. Oh well. I think that you have the Blues covered on this one. It falls into the Piedmont Blues style (imho). Piedmont or rag-time, who cares --- this is just one terrific number. Great performance, song, and entire recording. Excellent job. Freddy J

"geeare1" Really? I’m sorta surprised to hear that ‘cause it sounds kinda weird to me. Distorted but not distorted or something. I just couldn’t figure it out. That's a surprise as I thought this was intended (passionate pinching of the strings... ). I imagine you are using a matched pair (AKG C1000)? And if not, how do you deal with the possible phase issues? "geeare1"In my opinion you get a great acoustic sound That's an even bigger surprise, thanks! And it's encouraging to hear this as I've made quite a bit of progress on that front in the past few months (according to my ears). Part of that process has been to pay close attention to my technique/performances, reviewing my "home-made" picking patterns and all that sort of thing. Thanks for the info... and if you figure it out (I know you will), let us know what was up with that.

Gary - It's to your credit that you are not quite satisfied, I think always keeping the bar just out of "perceived" reach keeps you challenging yourself. You are much better finger picker than I and you are one of my inspriations to really work on my fingerpicking over this past winter. I logged a lot of hours working on patterns and working extensively with open string inversions , which I'm continually amazed at how many inversions there are that can utilize E,A,D,G, or B notes, litterally hundreds. 5 months of pushing the bar has really brought my confidence in fingerpicking to a new level for me. Just the result of constantly not being satisfied. I continue to push it. You're sounding good, and obviously you have put in a lot of hours to play at the level you do and it shows, as it does for a number of guitar players on this site. Unless I'm just a slow learner, I know how much practice it takes to play even reasonable well, and a number of guys and gals on this site, have paid some serious dues. And I think we all would agree that in the end it's really a satisfying feeling. I think anyone who has not reveiwed all the tunes on your site is missing a treat. I think anytime we hear something we like on this site, we should go listen to what they've posted over time. A lot of cool stuff. - Daryl

timidi: Thank you, Tim! Tap: Hi and thanks very much for listening and commenting. I'm glad you liked the tune. Freddy J: Tell the man to lighten up and quit working you so hard Well, the truth is, I'm basically incompetent so I'm lucky to have a job at all Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words. Alegria: I imagine you are using a matched pair (AKG C1000)? umm...no. They're left over from my gigging days and were purchased years ago and years apart. As for phase issues, maybe that's the problem? Actually I think it's compression that's bugging me. I'll have to mess with it some more and see what I can do. darylcrowley: Hey Daryl, you are way too kind, my friend . I've always played fingerstlye to some extent but once I stopped working in bands it became more important to me to be able make as much noise by myself as possible. It's cool to hear that you're working on fingerstyle playing, too. There are lots of fingerstyle jazz players, as I'm sure you know. And lots of other styles to listen to for inspiration. Keep pushin' that bar, dude and I look forward to hearing the results of your hard work. Thanks, again.
