brickwall eq filter and flat(ish) spectra
i was looking at a reference song via SPAN and noticed that there is a sort of 'brickwall' at 16k - it's actually a straight line at 16k with absolutely no frequencies beyond it. can anyone tell me how this was done ? also, this particular song's spectra is very controlled - almost flat from 60hz to 16k, max at around 30 db . im sure this was done with hardware compressors / limiters. how can i achieve or get close, entirely ITB ?

Josh was it an mp3 you were listening to? If so, that's why you see it. If it's a wave file, the ME decided that 16k on up wasn't correct for the song. I've actually done this a few times myself. Sometimes those upper air frequencies can wreak havoc depending on who does the mix...so we just low pass 16k and above with a good eq. But just about always, you'll see that brickwall at 16k on up when listening to an mp3...even at 320kb encoding. :) -Danny

i can't imagine anything sounding good, with a curve like that. if you spend some time, studying the curves of professionally recorded and released efforts, you'll see that NONE of them, will look anything like that curve.

Danny, i ripped the tracks from a cd. the files i looked at were *.wma files at 44/16 all of the tracks have 16k cut off. batsbrew: the curve isnt really flat - i should've been more precise - a picutre would help but what i mean is the curve is more so controlled and without mid frequencies fluctuating wildly as my curves seem to do. i notice that on a project i'm working on now this is happening and it seems to stem from the vocals but no matter how much compression and or limiting i use, i can't seem to control these fluctuations.

midrange frequencies fluctuating, is the heart and soul of your sound. flatten that, and ruin your sound.

i get that but i am looking at a professionally recorded track vs. mine and i wonder how they get it so controlled and sounding good. the curve is more controlled on all frequencies whereas my curve has wild fluctuations. this is probably not easily described without a pic...

What you're seeing is an artifact of the conversion from PCM to WMA, which is the default format for Windows Media Player. Assuming that's what you're using, you can alter the rip settings (via the Format menu) so that it creates wav files rather than wma.
