What's wrong with buying one locally, with a month or so of exchange or refund? ...and a year or so of warantee? Up to a certain level, I believe it's hard to beat off-the-shelf units...And if you don't buy the latest you get real good deal.. I'd check what one off-the-shelf gives by pricing each component and itemize it and see if you can make it cheaper...I doubt it.

hey...thx for your reply. i've just had no luck recording without the pc stuttering and crashing so i thought i'd just assemble one with the right components. i know the right cpu and motherboard are crucial but i'm just not sure which ones are compatible.

Troubles in the past, nor success in the past guarantee the same results in the future.. I think it ought to be realized that the vast majority of people run Sonar on off-the-shelf units.. Otherwise Sonar would be out of business.

Yeah, I just built an i7, w/ msi board, 4 gigs, 600 watt PS, dual display card, DVD burner, new case, etc. for well under $1k. Got all the parts from Frys. Some stuff was on sale and others had rebates. Just got an 1 TB drive for $60, so if you look a bit you can find parts on sale.

You can build your own computer that will potentially be more targeted to DAW applications, but it is certainly no guarantee that any of your problems will be solved. If you have not been able to determine what is causing the problems on several computers, it is quite likely you will reproduce the same configuration problems on a new unit. A new box will not "know" how to run Sonar any better than the old box, and it will be built from general purpose components just as your old box was. With some exceptions like incompatible components or generally using a waaay underpowered machine for the demands of your project, a lot of the kind of problem you describe are fixable without a complete rebuild. What is in the machine that will not run Sonar now?
