bussing question

I hate to sound stupid but - why do the busses in a template have a bus labeled master (at the bottom) & then the "real" master that is labeled in the center of the channel strip that goes to the usb device. That seems redundant...why would anyone need the first "master" unless to use as an aux return or some other purpose & then it should be labeled as such? Thanks.

Most of us have a "master buss" to route all our audio tracks to. Master buss is different from master out.  The master out has no FX bin for example and is only there so we can adjust the output level if needed. If you use a master buss as the final buss before it hits the master out you have more control and you should leave the level on the master out at unity.

This give you one place where all audio goes to for the last bit of processing.

Over time you will see how useful this idea is.

It is not a dumb question.

You use the Master bus to apply Fx globally across your 2 bus.

A typical Mastering chain would include EQ, Compression & Limiting, but there are as many variations of this as there are fleas on a dog.

Dammit John it must be early there!

Excellent! Thank you. If I understanding correctly, the mastering process takes place at the master bus. For some reason I thought it took place somewhere else.

It can or not. The reason to call it the master buss is all other buses are subordinate to it. At least that is the way most use it.
