cakewalk sound center

Alright, I have two very small clips that sound nice and clear.
When I play them back with the keyboard hooked up, they play whatever tone is currently on the keyboard, when I play it back with the keyboard not hook up, it is a basic piano sound.
How do I make this clip use one of the tones from the sound center, like say from the string section?
And of coarse record it with that tone or setting. I'm not sure how this works, when I used protracks I only used my guitar and pedal, it just kind of happened.

    I don't have SC, but I'm sure it's similar to the other soft synths I've used.
    In the MIDI track, select an output channel, a bank, if SC has more than 1 bank (General MIDI only has 1 bank), and a patch, the instrument sound you want to hear.
    Set the output of that MIDI track to SC and it should read your channel, bank (if applicable) and patch info and play them.
    Channels are important with MIDI. If you don't select a channel, you'll get piano. If you have 2 MIDI tracks on the same channel, they'll sound like the same instrument regardless of the patch you choose in the second track.

    This is after the song has been recorded not during right?
    That get's a little confusing.
    I tried to add an arpeggiated effect to one of the tracks, but for some reason it added it to both.
    I'm not sure what I was doing wrong.

    You need to double click on the sound center to open the GUI. Once it is open, you have a list of instrument catagories and several columns each more specific.... Type. subtype, and finally the program.

    for example the first one might be BRASS  the second electronic and acoustic ..... click acoustic and that breaks out into trumpet, french horn, trombone  and when you click it (double click?) that instrument loads into the player.

    I'm going by memory... cause I'm not on the DAW. Here's the GUI you should see and be working with.

    You can play any soft synth in real time, as you play the keyboard. Or you can change to the soft synth later if you want to sample different synths for the best one for your track.
    Playing the onscreen keyboard does not get recorded into the track. That keyboard is just for hearing the patches you select.
    You also don't record the soft synth sound into a track; only the MIDI data gets recorded. To permanently 'record' the soft synth sound into an audio track, you need to bounce the synth to an audio track by clicking th MIDI track number so it lights up, then hold the computer keyboard's Ctrl key while clicking the soft synth tracks number so it is also highlighted. Maybe mute all the other tracks, just in case, then go to Edit>Bounce To Track(s), make some selections in the Bounce menu, then click OK.
