can I automate only part of the track?

looks like I add automation whole track is affected, can it be just selected clip?

    Just because an envelope shows on the entire track does not mean any change to anything is going on. If the envelope is flat its not doing any automation as such. So you can use that envelope and just automate a section and let is go back to not doing anything when past that section.
