cannot play wave file

When I go to import a 24 bit wave file and I try to play it before I import it I get a message "cannot play wave file". It only happens with 24 bit files. 16 bit files play just fine.
My sound card is set for 24 bit. I can play the same 24 bit wave files with windows media player or any other program I have installed. Any suggestions?

Really? My Windows Media Player can only play 16 bit. I don't know of any regular players that can play anything else, including Pyro.
