clever way to replace loads of clips by another clip

I don't know if this will work but, if "the clip" is the same one clip used over and over referencing one wav file, you may be able to trick the program by replacing it with the new clip in your audio folder. So, new wav file but the same name as the original wav file. 

I'm pretty sure you can't do this internally though. Sort of like "find and replace" I guess.

Usually, when you copy a clip you get a brand-new file (so you can subsequently edit each clip independently).

A better way to do it, although it's too late now, would be to use a sample player. That way, you're using the same clip over and over and substitution is very easy.

samplers ? No way  Right now I am even doing crazier things, using my arrange view as a piano-roll (just one octave) by placing small samples all over the screen.  

no, say I have a clip called BASSDRUM, I placed multiple instances of that clip all over the track. Now I want to replace all those clips by multiple instances of 1 other clip called SNARE.

Why the reluctance to use a sample player? Sampling is exactly what you're doing now. 


A sampler just makes it easy to re-use sounds and move them around. You don't need anything as fancy as Kontakt; the simple Cyclone plugin is free with SONAR and will do what you want.

Sounds like you need to over write the base sample with your new sound - ( same name and location ). Then bounce to clips. Then call it a done deal and go back and correct the base sample. What you seem to be asking for is a sample replacement tool and that's essentially what Bit Flipper is recommending via a sampler. If it's a drum / percussion sound then Battery is a very good tool for this. I imagine drumagog is very good for this too.
