cloned tracks open up linked in X3
In X1, I used to clone tracks and the new cloned track would be an independent entity I could do with as I so desired. In X3, the clone is somehow linked to the original such that if I mute one track, the other mutes. What? Why would I clone a track if not that I wanted to do something different with it? How do I clone a track and have a free, independent track?

it is an audio track, like a vocal or a guitar track.

I'm sorry, I have brain damage, been working on this since 5 am. It happens when I clone a midi track. I uncheck 'clone events' box and two new midi tracks appear (not one), and those are linked to the original (even though the 'link' box gets greyed out when you uncheck the 'clone events' box. How do I clone a midi performance track without it being linked (mute one, the other is unmuted)?

To unlink linked clips
1. In the Clips pane, select the clips you want to unlink. 2. Right-click on any selected clip and choose Unlink from the pop-up menu. SONAR displays the Unlink Clips dialog box. 3. Choose the unlink option you want, and click OK. SONAR unlinks the clips and updates the Clips pane accordingly. From now on, any changes you make to one of the clips are applied only to remaining linked clips, if any.

Nope. There are no clips in the midi clone, so I can't unlink clips when there are none. Here is exactly what I am doing: 1. select midi track #10 that has a grand piano performance on it [one big*ss clip beginning to end, because the lady can play flawlessly] 2. right click on the blue highlighted #10 icon, and select clone track unchecking the events 3. I get 2 new tracks, not one, neither of which has any events in it 4. when I mute one track, all three get muted, thus I assume the two new tracks are linked I don't want two new linked-to-the-original clones, I want one free unlinked clone. Why is X3 doing this differently than X1?

Oh I see, don't use the header area. Select the track with the smart tool on the track itself at the top. All you want is the MIDI contents of the track. You don't need the full track. Notice that a track now has a title bar along its top. This is where you select the track.

Nope. I'm using the smart tool. If I click on the "track" in an area where there is no clip, or if I click at the top of the clip (where it says "Record 6"), at neither spot is there an option to Clone. By your use of the term "header area" I assume that is the area left of the track area (track area being where the clips are) and the header area contains the M S RecordButton, track number, the effects bin, all the other in-out-track-control stuff. If I right-click anywhere in what I believe is the "header area", I do get an option to clone the track, but in that case I get 2 new clones all linked to original. In no other place do I get a right-click option to clone. What am I missing?

further clarification ... this track is a True Piano track that CONTAINS midi information. I guess that is somehow different from a midi track. Maybe that is why I can't clone it....

It is an instrument track, not an audio track or a MIDI track but a hybrid of the two. Do not attempt to clone an instrument track, break the track out into separate audio and MIDI tracks by right-clicking on the track strip and selecting "Split Instrument Track". Then clone the MIDI track. Or just copy the MIDI data into a new track.

So it's an instrument track then ( which is what I asked in the first place ?) . If you clone an instrument track it is linked to the other one, that is what it does. If you want to use the midi info for another synth, copy the midi to a new midi track and set the output to wherever you want it to go.

As Paulo suggested back in post #2, there are issues with cloning Instrument tracks. I recommend you avoid it. It doesn't make sense to clone an Instrument, anyway; an Instrument track is by definition a combination of one MIDI track, one audio track and one soft synth. If you need a copy of the MIDI pointing to the same synth on which to experiment, split the track first, and clone the MIDI track, only. In that case, though, you'll have to leave the original tracks split because you can't combine two MIDI tracks into one Instrument track. If you don't want the cloned MIDI track pointing to the same synth, just create new track, and copy the MIDI clip(s) to it.

As another alternative, you could also Ctrl+Shift+Drag the MIDI clip down to open space in the clips pane - that should create a new MIDI track with the clip at the same point in the timeline.

I was going by the idea this was not a simple instrument track. When are people going to stop asking a shortcut for getting a sound working quick from treating it as if it were the same as a MIDI and an audio tracks? It makes a lot of sense that a SI track is very limited in what can be done with them. We say don't use them unless you want something quick and dirty and very limited.
