presuming aptitude and/or interest...shouldn't you be finding a way?
if you literally have no clue, why do you have to or why would anyone ask you to write a score?
since you're a music student, you must have been given some learning materials or teaching.
how to approach a composition is different for everyone and every situation.
    start with an idea.

Do you have any midi drum loops in 6/8. I'd just copy a drum loop pattern over maybe 32 measures and then while listening to that I'd start singing or humming melodies, and/or bass lines, and/or vamp chord progressions on piano or guitars until you get some ideas. And then build from there.

If he said he has to write a score, I doubt drum loops would be appropriate. I would say start by mapping out overall details, like approx length, instrumentation, form, etc. Then get into the details of creating melodies, themes or other material. Big to small is usually the best way to go. And remember, you don't necessarily need to start at measure one. If you have a great idea, write it down, and build toward it.

If the question is what is a 6/8 meter and how do you write in it. You would need to go back to square one and learn those basics before attempting any composition. (It is basically a duple [2] pattern with three eighth notes per beat.)

    Sing to yourself:
"ONE two three TWO two three "
over and over and over and over and over.
Meanwhile try to get a melody to go with it. ("My Favorite Things" keeps coming to me, I wish it would be a cooler song instead)
Practice the waltz with an imaginary partner to this counting out loud, and make up a tune to waltz to.
When you've got the melody put it on paper. It will be in 6/8 time.

    Voila.

    You're welcome.

How do we know? He made a great recording of it. But can we infer from that his own subjective impressions of the original?

Yes, we can. I don't imagine he would have done the song had he not thought it was cool.
And since he can't support the notion, we can infer anything we please.

Count to four but stop at 3.... then start at one again. Or just count to 6 and forget all that 4 stuff anyways.

Seriously .. If you're doing pop or rock music...start the kick on 1 and the snare on
the four, that might get you started.

You will need to start by setting the project meter. You do this by clicking on View>Meter/Key from the command menu, then editing the parameters in the dialog box.. The correct parameters to make for 6/8 time would be entering 6 in the beats in measure box and 8 in the beat value box. Close the dialog box and save the project. Good Luck with your composition.

Listen to Zeppelin's first album. At least three 6/8 tunes on there.

Since you are a beginner and have no clue I should mention that when you are in the meter/key window you may see 4/4. To change this, in Cakewalk, look for the yellow symbol at the upper left corner just above the current project tempo. You can either click that symbol, or press "A" on your computer keyboard to access the dialog box and make the appropriate change to 6/8. When entering notation in the PRV or Staff View you can then choose to enter eigth notes instead of quarter notes. HTH

    contact,

The short answer to your question: Yes. Having been a musician most of my life has given me the chance to see most common signatures as well as some unusual types. Do you know what Rubato is?

I was asking our music student friend not you

    he seems to have disappeared....

and yes, Rubato is an Italian pastry
or an elderly gentleman I met wandering the streets of Florence
    or
a musical term for slightly speeding up or slowing down the tempo of a piece at the discretion of the soloist or the conductor. It was used frequently in music of the Romantic Period, and is especially common in piano music. It also requires the use of altering the relationships among the written note values and the played ones.

    Contact,

Sorry for my misunderstanding. In the lower right side of the box you are indicated as replying to me. No offense intended on my part. Due to the particulars of the original question, it seemed to me music_student07 is already a composer/arranger learning how to use music software. Wish I had the benefit of even basic notation software when I was studying Music Theory and Practice. :)

    PS:
You are correct about Rubato. Rubato is Italian meaning "freedom or irregular rhythm against a steady accompaniment; hence, a type of Agogic Accent." It is usually written in by the composer as a cue for the musician(s) and not intended as spontaneously used throughout an entire composition, unless specified. Rhubarb might be used in a pastry. LOL
