I really like my Waves SSL comp, Voxengo Elephant, the Antress 1176 emulation and the URS Strip Pro.

I use the Classic free compressor, but I'm not really sure what I'm doing lol. Just mess with the presets.

Also there's another free one called Cleancomp which is very simple, just 3 variables to alter, but it seems to do the job for me.

I think you need a spellchecker plugin, man!

Sorry, it's my week to be the designated spelling and grammar checker. Ever since CJ started actually reading his own posts, I haven't had to issue as many citations.

The choice of compressor plugins is often determined by what it's going to be used for. Most users will cite a favorite for vocals, another for the master bus, and another for drums.

That said, my favorite (as in most-used) compressor is Ozone's Volume Maximizer limiter/compressor, which finds a home in every project. If you don't want to spend money on a third-party plugin, the bundled Boost11 is actually quite good when care is taken to not apply it too thickly.

For track EQ, the Sonitus compressor works just fine, and the Sonitus multiband compressor is another favorite of mine.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

If you just want to compress...anything will do...the stuff that comes with Sonar isn't bad.

If you want 'color' then there are a bunch of goodies out there. My favorites are pretty much anything from UAD, Waves SSL and API and most recently Stillwell's stuff which is very, very good...and cheap.

I'm due a SHED load then, although firefox has a decent spell checker. colour or color.. centre or center..etc etc (and NO I'm not changing it to US settings )

    Im just ytping slower..
Anyways, each compressor will compress anythnig you want. You just need to find the ones that YOU like and that does justice for YOUR music. One thnig i need to mention is that the most important thing in compression is the settings. So learn what they all do and listen to each one to see what YOU like

    Compressor for what?

Lots of uses for dynamics, and you can get real specialized about using the right tool for the job if you care to.

Just starting out? The Sonitus compressor has all the basics and a few nice presets to get accustomed to how it all works. I've been using it myself lately, having just rediscovered it.

The Sonitus tools shipped with Sonar Producer are really very well done, for the most part. These are indeed high quality 32-bit tools, entirely up to the job or producing pro CD-quality audio. They are a great starting point for anyone, even for an old pro who's just getting into digital production. There's really no need to spend hundreds on overpriced software plugins unless one is looking to solve very specific problems.

#1: For tame guitar and drums: Ozone-3s Multi-Band Compression module ... you can run up to 3 compressors (limiter, compressor, expander) per band x 4 bands ... not as 'intelligent' nor transparent as Bit's favorite (the O3 Volume Maximizer) but excellent for expanding and maximizing drum and guitar transients, then limiting lower bass spikes, etc.

#2: For Vox: Voxengo Voxformer: The fastest way to do make Vox amazing ... with 7-8 compressors: for saturation, presence, lower freq, higher freq, de-S, and 2-stage compression. Technically, Voxformer is not really a generic compressor: "You do not have to worry about common ratio, release, attack and make-up gain controls since they are automatically selected by the advanced compression algorithm" --HeHe So forget using Voxformer as a limiter-proper ... you'll just have to tame your spikes and shreaks with something else ... which leads to the next favorite compressor

#3: Manual compression: Again with manual compression (i.e., a volume envelope and a mouse) ... "You do not have to worry about common ratio, release, attack and make-up gain controls since they are automatically selected by the advanced compression algorithm" --HeHe ... your brain.
