computer (PC ) suggestions
I'm converting garage into studio/ going with Antelope Goliath interface and Sonar. Any suggestions on a computer? I'm not knowledgeable to do too much assembling. Is there one out there good to go? I usually just do live recording...some midi things. thanks, David

I have home built all of my computers for twenty years now, it's not that difficult, especially not nowadays. But if you're uncomfortable with that and want to be fuss free I would recommend contacting someone like Jim Roseberry from this forum who builds custom DAW PCs. You might spend a little bit more than on an off-the-shelf deal but you can discuss your needs in person with someone who understands and you'll get a "clean" system tweaked in all the right places.
Off-the-shelf can be hit or miss for DAW stuff.

Jim is the man! Check out his website. His PC builds are worth every cent. Now when I'm in the studio, I don't even think of my computer anymore, it just works!

Jim is great, and there are other PC DAW builders. That is the best, safest route. Also the most expensive, but not in time because Jim etc. install your software/hardware and make sure everything is running together. If you are competent with hard/software, you can buy and off-he-shelf HP etc Desktop and throw in a 2nd hard drive and 2-fer video card and be set for a computer. And today, a lot of software practically installs itself (see SONAR/NI) and interfaces are pretty easy.

I actually didn't find custom DAW prices to be any more than what you'd pay if you bought those parts yourself and pay yourself $15 per hour to build it. They are more money than an off the self because they are built with better parts.

^ Custom-made DAWs can also be cheaper than the "business" (ie. expensive) line of good PC makers with the same parts. And don't expect much help from HP when you can't get SONAR working right ;-)

Exactly. Imagine phoning a call centre to sort out your audio dropouts. The after service of a DAW builder shouldn't be overlooked.

I like to build computers for fun. Not as much experience as Jim, but I know what I am doing- most of the time. I would recommend to do it yourself because it is a good skill to learn. Now days it is as hard as putting together Lego. Everything marked, everything fits only one way, fool proofed with no risk. The hardest part is to apply thermal paste and CPU cooler, everything else is easy- my 12 years old knows how to build computer. And soooo much fun! Also you probably aware that Goliath releasing new model Goliath HD available in July. Unfortunately, they do not work with Thunderbolt on Windows- see my thread on this forum. You will have to use USB 3 on HD model, which is $7000, no discounts, or USB 2 on old model $4500.

Man if that isn't a catchy marketing term I don't know what is. ARCTIC SILVER....Brrrrrrrrrr. I get cold just reading it. Better wear gloves with that stuff. We're in nipple salute territory. It really works well though. I used it on my last build. I can't guarantee it's from the arctic . It is silver. I think it works better than what they usually give you with the cpu. Just remember, it isn't like you're icing a cake with this stuff. A little dab will do.

Bought a computer from Jim Roseberry. Stepped me through each choice over the phone---very helpful. Yea.....bugged about Goliath's USB 2.0 for windows, maybe I'll go a different route for interface?

Congrats man! You'll love your StudioCat DAW. My last two computers have been from Jim, and I ended up selling the first one to a friend who is still using it after I upgraded to a newer system. Solid systems all the way around.
