I wear progressive lens and once your used to them you never go back, Trouble with reading glasses is they are one focal point. So computer glasses are what works best at around 3'. But if you turn around to tell the cat to get out of your guitar case you just about puke because everything is so out of focus.

Thanks guys. I don't mean regular reading glasses or progressives. I mean "computer glasses":

Point of this is, I have pretty bad eyes. Not the vision part but I think I have ocular migraines and am very sensitive to light.

    anyways, this is a bump:)

My mother swears by them and I've given some serious thoughts to getting a pair.  I tried hers out and found them to be less fatiguing than either using my current, distant only glasses, or when I just go without.  I looked a bit funny in her choice of frames, but I tried them for about two hours once and they worked quite well.

My glasses are bifocals with the computer distance on top and the reading distance on the bottom. Works great but I look like a nerd. You have to give some I guess.

+1 ... well, not about the nerd aspect.  Last eye exam, my vision had not changed, so I didn't need new glasses for non-computer work (which are bifocals - distance and reading).  Since I could inexpensively get a new pair courtesey of health insurance, I opted for computer-monitor-distance on top and reading-distance on bottom.  Prior to this I just used cheapo drugstore reading glasses for computer work, and was always swapping them with the regular glasses when I had to look at anything on paper.  What a difference!

I have glasses normally, but the biggest change I did to reduce eye fatigue was install Flux on my computer.

Yeah, you put in your zip code to let it know where you are. Then it tweeks your computers colors/brightness to match the suns outside. So when the sun sets it dims a bit and it brightens during the day. It helps keep your internal clock on point so you can sleep easier at night. http://stereopsis.com/flux/

I didn't need glasses till I was 44 - thought I'd got away with not needing them, then over a three week period my arms suddenly grew too short to read the newspaper :-(

Nowadays (at 51) I have varifocals for driving/outdoor/general use, plus a pair for the computer (approx 2-4' focal range) which are the pair I generally wear plus a close-up set for small print, fiddly jobs, soldering, welding etc.

Yes, they all help. In fact they're essential.

My computer pair are anti-glare coated but not tinted - I spend quite a bit of time doing graphics/photographic work and have enough fun with colour matching without looking at the screen through coloured filters.

If you suspect you're having any kind of vision problem or headaches related to it, do yourself a favour and have your eyes comprehensively tested. The problem may be the kind of thing that can be easily corrected/stopped from deteriorating if found early but be a real problem if left untreated.

I'd get the eye-test as a first step rather than spend money on computer glasses in the hope they work only to find they don't and you still need to spend the money on glasses.

It could be worth talking to your GP/health professional about the migraines/light sensitivity as well if you haven't already, or have a look at some of the on-line support forums. I assumed for years that light sensitivity caused at least some of my migraines, but it turned out that in my case at least I had it backwards - my light sensitivity is actually caused by the migraine but becasue I notice that before the headache etc. hit I'd put the cart before the horse.

@Beagle it takes a bit to get used to but I have noticed a HUGE difference in the quality of sleep and it is kind of a visual cue to start winding down for the day. I spend all day working on a computer and making music on a computer. Its made falling asleep way easier than without it. Plus its free.

I spend all day working on a computer and then go home and my hobby is recording on a computer.  but I just do not have any desire for my monitor to dim after dark or be very bright at times it's not dark outside.

to me there's no appeal at all for that.  but I'm glad it helps you!

If it helps you sleep at work, then I'm all for it.

I wear progressive lenses and the monitor looks best when looking through the middle.  Even so, my eyes get tired after staring at a monitor for several hours.

Op I hope you've been to see a professional; about your eyes. It's not something to cheap out on. And "Computer Glasses are just standard Magnifiers with a anti glare, Lots of drug store magnifiers have anti glare. My glasses which are progressive lenses, also have UV protection which is also very important.Progressive lens ( in case this is a unknown to some) are variable power from top to bottom. You brain automatically looks in the right place and your always in focus. But it becomes critical to place your monitor at the right height so your not cricking your neck.

I have special glasses for work in the 18 - 36 inch range. I spend some extra money for coatings on these. I need them for bench work and computer work. Worth the money for me.
