computer woes - strummy has company

Steve,
I feel your pain.  my system is dying.  I planned to record all day yesterday but ended up fighting with the computer all day instead and now I can't even get on the interet with it because the NIC stopped working.  It started out with problems where it wouldn't allow me to import wave files into X1 - I thought it was a sonar problem - but then I checked 8.5 and it wouldn't work there either.  then I booted in my old winxp drive and it wouldn't work there either.  then I figured out that if I had the comptuer on its side it would work.  [rollseyes]

then it stopped working that way as well.  then drives started failing.  then the NIC stopped working.

before the NIC went out I thought it might have been a power supply problem, but I don't think so now.  although I did unplug all items from the power supply except the boot drive and things are still not working.

so I'm researching new motherboards, CPUs and RAM.  DANG IT!!!  I just bought new RAM to upgrade THIS system.  ARRRRGGGH!

Sorry to hear that Beag. Maybe try booting with Knoppix to try and help sort your problems. Knoppix is a live OS that can run from RAM and will allow you to access your Harddrive if you need to backup stuff ..... At least you may be able to rule out other things this way.

Man, what a frickin nighmare this is!

I got the new motherboard and processor and you'd think that since windows is already loaded and running on the hard drive that all I would have to do is plug in the new hard drive, plug everything up and it should just need new updates for the new motherboard, but it should boot up, right?

no.  apparently that's not the way it works.

win7 would not boot up, it would get to the "balloon flying window" or whatever you want to call it, then it would reboot instead of getting to the login screen.  reboot everytime.

so I'm having to reload windows again.  that means I have to reload all of my programs again, even tho I just did this a few weeks ago when I added new memory and hard drive and new win7 up from winxp.

    this is frustrating.

As you surmised Beagle, that is not the way it works.   When you change chipsets (via the MB swap) the OS just starts thrashing.

I do hope you get it all sorted out.  No one likes frustration.  You have my empathy.

that's very good advice mike.  actually yesterday I was trying to take some shortcuts.  I ended up installing win7 on the hard drive again already then, but tried to import my old registry so I wouldn't have to reinstall everything.  that didn't really work.  I think tonight I'm going to start over, re-format the drive and take the slow and methodical approach/

well - I assumed it was the motherboard since systems kept failing and the power supply was not the problem.
