computor wont turn on FIXED

bummer. pushed the button on the front of the computor
yesterday. the little green light came on but the computor
doesnt start. how could i tell if its the power supply or the
motherboard?

jimmy

EDIT
it was the power supply. thank goodness thats all it was. I had one
on hand. this one is quieter too. maybe the bearings in the motor
was going bad in the other one and thats why it was noisy.

Thanks for the help huys

If the power supply fan isn't turning and if the CPU fan isn't turning, it's most likely the power supply. If you disconnect the power supply from the motherboard and the PS fan starts moving, it's probably a short in the motherboard. There is also a possibility it's just the power switch itself; it sees a lot of on-off cycles and has been known to fail. But the PS would be the top suspect.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Hi,

Weird ... very weird ... my power supply went out yesterday too on my main machine!

Was watching espn, and computer died and reset itself ... went back to watching espn ... reset ... this time I turned it on ... came up for 1 minute and died.

The power button on the back (in the power supply, is often a reset ... didn't do any good ... switched to a different outlet and it is as dead as a brick ... no posting ... no nothing ...

I'm pretty sure this is a power supply ... getting another one today ... I needed a backup anyway and didn't have one ... go figure (several computers) ...

Your case ... if it posts (the beep) and dies after that ... I am thinking that it could be bios/motherboard ... but don't count on me here ... I'm not a good hardware support guy ... I would find a friend that knows computers and get him a pizza and beer and cross your fingers ... but I don't think it sounds good ... but might be video card ... but you would at least see the bios screen information go by the as the computer loads up ... if it does that and then nothing, before windows ... I bet your computer got hacked badly (sysop's nightmare!) ... time to redo it all, if that is the case.

Sounds like a bad PS to me...

Do the HDs, CPU fan, and Case Fan/s spin-up completely?
If not, it's almost certainly the PS

    hey Bit

thanks for the info. ive put togther a few computors over the years
but i forget a lot of things. All i know is how to put them together.
what has me confused right now is it seems the MB connects the PS
    to itself.

If I disconnect the PS should it come on if its working? It
starts to sound like its the PS. wierd thing happened the other day
Ive never seen before. a screen came up saying something about
    temperature.

I shut it down as fast as i could. Left it off for about 30 minutes
turned it back on and all seemed fine. In all my years Ive never
had a bad PS that i can recall.

I dont have anything double clocked or such. The cpu fan
must be variable speed as the computor warms up the fan
gets faster. (when it was working) also there is a strong
current draw it seems. when i try to turn it on because the light on
    an external drive dims.

its a dedicated daw. no network to other computors or
internet access.. i havent got into it yet to check. Man I dread
that all the cables and such underneath my desk. Oh well
ive had many good years on this machine so i guess its time
    for something to happen.

hopefully i can find the problem. Thanks so much for the info
Ill post when i find out something

    Mosh

No it never gets past the beep and no screen to see either.
i"ll have to get further into it to know more

    hey jim

No the PS fan or the cpu fan dont come on. ive got some
other supplys i hope that just changing out works. thanks for
the reply. but i thought it was weird the little green light on the
front of the computor comes on but the fans dont spin.
