cover songs better than the originals....

Saw this on the Gibson site:

Nothing like hearing Dweezle Zappa cover a Bee Gees song....

Covers redone better  I guess it could be argued....

I do agree with #1.

    Good find Herb.

I'm definitely in agreement with Van Halen's version of You Really Got Me being better than the Kink's original

I'd also include Judas Priest's excellent covers of Joan Baez's Diamonds and Rust and Fleetwood Mac's Green Manalishi...

No one has yet to cover a CHB song better than the original (even if that wanker bassist always plays the Am note over and over).

    (or have they?)

Probably a good idea for another thread, but the worst cover ever - Metallica's version of Whiskey in the Jar

Thin Lizzy's arrangement of the tradition song is miles better

But are either versions truely covers or just arrangements of a 'traditional' song?

I heard Heart do a cover of Led Zep's Rock and Roll that was very good.

The London Philharmonic does a nice cover of Beethoven's 5th.

I also very much like Atlanta Rhythm Section version of "Spooky"

But the original is pretty cool as well.

And the James Taylor version of "You Got a Friend" is nice...........but I strongly prefer Carol Kings version.

I have a bootleg of Keith Richards doing a piano/vocal version of The Everly Brothers' Dream.
It's from when he was in Toronto in the 70s for his big drug trial.  It's somewhat off-key, but an incredibly beautiful piece of music.

The memory of Young Man Blues slightly tainted to my ears anyway by a lackluster and terminally boring live version performed by Roger Daltrey on New Years Eve's Hootenanny hosted by Jools Holland on BBC1 here in the UK

Don't know if remixes count, but Venetian Snares Sabbath Dubs EP is awesome.

Although Mr Snares is usually a breakcore artist, he gets into deep, heavy, dub for this.

I've played it to a few hardened Black Sabbath purists, and everyone has agreed it works
    really well.
