How can you convince them it's an important required part of your production process?

I don't even know where the servers are, let alone who I could schmooze into whitelisting it for me. decisions like that are made way up the food chain from where I sit. I can submit a form to ask for it to be unblocked for me only IF I have a business purpose. and that would require my manager's approval as well as the IT manager. no way they'll let me in just to complete A Moob Oddity.

The solution is simple, Beagle. This is why you have PTO. Shirley, you'd expend your vacation time solely for our amusement, right? Other solutions include the following: - Stop wasting time on "sleep" and work on your epic masterpiece instead - Blackmail management - Work From Home - Let them know that the random panther attacks in the office may be minimized by unblocking this site Just trying to help.

haha! all good suggestions, but.. 1) I have already exhausted most of my PTO! 2) I'll have to get back to you on that one. 3) unfortunately that won't work since I have to be at the test equpiment to run it. and even if my wife would let me bring home a thermal chamber and rack mounted test equipment, we don't have 3 phase power at home to hook it up. 4) hmmm...think they'll fall for that one???

Follow the Bapu. Personal laptop with a private air card. Work all you want on private stuff with absolutely no mechanical trace. How do you make that look like you're working on their stuff? Tell them you use your laptop because it is faster than any workstation/server combination they can give you (we all know how behind the curve they are, right?).

nope. that doesn't work either. there is not a public wifi on the faciility. I can use the company's wifi that's available at the test lab where my test equipment is, but it goes thru their firewall. thus the quandry. i'm currenly on a company laptop - checked out for keeping me online during testing out here in the test lab (one of the hundreds of buildings on this campus) and it's an i7 and I'm on wifi, but it's the company's wifi and I can't by pass their proxy.

You can also explain that you're under orders from Bapu. That should be all the clearance you'll need. It also may take care of that "Day job keeping you from important things" problem.

I mentioned "private air card" on my personal laptop. I use an AT&T Air Card in my laptop (it's essentially a cellphone without the "phone"). I personally pay for the service. It's a bit pricey ($65/mo) but I'm off the "man's" grid.

ah - sorry - I misunderstood. but I don't have one of those and Mrs. Beagle would kill me if I added an air card bill to our current bills. and then you still wouldn't get the end of this episode because I'd be dead.

mm - look at post #13 above. what I'm currently working on requires a thermal chamber and a unique tester and test equipment out in a lab. that equipment requires 3 phase 208 to run it and a lot of cooling water. I can't take that equipment home with me.

no no I was assuming you have a laptop or desktop at work in a cube or office and you have a computer at HOME that You enable Remote Desktop Connection on. you access your home PC via remote desktop connection from the PC at work and access the Goanimation website on the home PC however this dosn't prevent your boss from invoking the non work related rule.. prolly so! they record everything we do. they don't keep the records long, but they record all websites we go to. and they can use that to fire us if they find us going to websites we shouldn't be going to. they've done it to some people I knew. it's funny that I just started using goanimate last week or two and now they decided to block it! they've been blocking everything here lately. soundclick, pandora, web radio broadcasts. they haven't blocked youtube yet, but I think it's coming.
