Hello there I am a new user of MC5, just started learning it. You need to run MC5 in 32 bit mode on the W7/64 OS.... that might be the cause of the problem. Even though it says W7 compatible, it must be run as a 32 bit program. It can not handle 64 bit OS. Try that and let us know.

It can not handle 64 bit OS. Try that and let us know. Herb - you and Greg both keep offering this advice but I'm still confused by it. Unfortunately I can't find my MC5 disks to try it for myself on my win7x64 machine - it was only loaded on the old winxp machine. my question - what exactly did you do to make it run "in 32bit mode"? my understanding was that you wouldn't have to do anything to make it do that. my understanding was that it's a 32bit program and under win7x64 it installs and runs as such. vista was different - in vistax64 it was necessary to right click on the executable and tell it to "run in xp mode" or something like that. but I thought that was not necessary in win7. so my question for you and greg - did you have to do anything like that or anything else to make MC5 run on a win7x64 machine? if so, please tell me exactly what you had to do so that I will know what to tell people when they ask how to do what you're telling them to do by making it run in 32bit mode.

adrix - make sure you have the win7x64 drivers for the 0404. the emu website shows that the PATCHMIX software is NOT compatible with win7 at all, but the DRIVERS are updated for win7x64. http://www.emu.com/support/files/download2.asp?Centric=764&Platform=1 make sure you click on the link under the DRIVERS / FIRMWARE heading. install those, restart your machine and see if you're still having the problem.

Herb - I understand that - but that didn't answer my question. what exactly are you telling it to do in order to get it to run? are you right clicking on the executable and choosing run as 32bit? even on win7x64? did you do this on YOUR system?

http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/reader.aspx/20091014 Installing Music Creator 5 under Vista x64 or Windows 7 x64 The information in this article applies to: Music Creator 5 Music Creator LE Although Music Creator 5 is not a native 64-bit application, it will install and function under a 64-bit OS. There are a few extra steps that need to be taken in order for it to install and function properly. Installation For the downloaded copy of Music Creator and Cakewalk Sound Center, please take the following steps: 1.Right-click on the setup file 2.Go to Properties | click the Compatibility tab 3.Check the box Run in Compatibility Mode and Run this Program as Administrator. Leaving Windows XP (SP3) selected. 4.Do this for both the Sound Center installer as well as Music Creator 5. 5.Run the installers. 6.Once complete, go through the same steps above with the Music Creator 5 shortcut that you will be using. 7.Download the Music Creator 5.0.5 Update. If you have Music Creator LE, download the Music Creator LE 5.0.6 Update. For the DVD version, navigate to Computer, right-click on your DVD ROM drive and click Open. Now go through the steps above by right-clicking the Setup file on the disc. Note - Windows 7 x64 uses the Program Compatibility Assistant, which should pick up the needed settings automatically. Click Reinstall in Compatibility Mode if prompted. VST Scan In order for the various soft synths (including Sound Center) to be picked up by the VST Scanner, you must manually add the (x86) VST Plug-ins path: 1.Go to Options | Global | VST Plug-ins 2.Click Add and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\vstplugins 3.Once added, click the Scan VST Folders button

Yes, since I installed SHS 6 32-bit so all the plug-ins will work, on this computer, which isn't my primary DAW. That's just so I can help the new folks easier without having to change computers, you know, look up stuff, copy images. Ran the Troubleshoot Compatibility thing and Windows set it up to work.

adrix - the advice here is important - follow those instructions greg listed. but also make sure you have the latest 64bit drivers for the 0404 like I said above as well.

I copied that info and printed it... in the event I ever need to upgrade my OS..... but I would likely loose my beloved MC4 by going to W7.....so...... not anytime soon.

Thanks to everyone for the kind suggestions. I have re installed from scratch music creator 5 and, without running it, the 5.0.5 patch and until now I had no crashes. I did not give to MC5 specific compatibility settings, if and when I will experience problems I will try to set the xp compatibility mode as suggested above. As specified in the 1st post I use the 0404 with its w7-64 beta drivers and the latest release of EMU patch mix using the ASIO routing settings i had painfully created my old PC, and after some initial glitches (patchmix was not installed correctly) the card is running fine with standalone instruments, a vst host and MC5.

[pedantic]actually you didn't specify you're using w7 64 beta drivers and the latest release of EMU Patch mix in your inital post. you stated "e-mu 0404 PCI audio interface w. win7 driver, working fine with other sw packages" - that's not the same thing as saying you have the latest drivers, that's saying you have SOME win7 drivers" [/pedantic] regardless, I am glad you have it working with no crashes now.

@Beagle: <pedantic>AFAIK the only w7 official drivers for the 0404 are released as beta, I thought it was implicit </pedantic> @57Gregy: they are (were) projects created with mc5.0.5 in the previous (broken) installation. The mc5 is the 1st release I am using. [thanks again, is good to see generous support from this community]

Update - After adding Audacity to the Cakewalk registry keys the crashes restarted BUT... fortunately changing the compatibility settings to Win XP SP3 the problem seems resolved. Thanks again.

@Beagle: <pedantic>AFAIK the only w7 official drivers for the 0404 are released as beta, I thought it was implicit </pedantic> fair enough, I guess! what do you mean by "adding Audacity to the Cakewalk registry keys"? do you mean for trying to get it to work from the "TOOLS" menu? I haven't tried that for Audaicty. Have you tried Goldwave? it's a much better program than Audacity, IMO. I'm not sure it will work from the TOOLS menu either, just a suggestion.

Yes, I added Audacity in the Tools menu and it works (see here for a guideline http://www.cakewalk.com/S...ader.aspx/2007013099), although I don't like very much its pedantic propension to transform any audio file in its native format. The guideline states that any wave editor can be added to the Tools Menu: the example is for SoundForge. I tried with Audacity and it worked so if you like Goldwave should be straightfordward adding it.

glad it works for you. I'm not super interested in getting that to work from inside sonar. I'd rather just use it outside of sonar if I need it, which is rare.
