crash recovery, What happens to the temporary files.

I was recording our rehearsal las night, did what I thought was a good take, went to the laptop to save it and Sonar had frozen, the only way I could get out of it was to switch off my laptop by holding in the on button.

When Sonar records it must save the audio to a temporary file before you save and they get transferred into the project folder. Are these recoverable after or have I blown the killer take?

It's not a big deal on this occasion, but I would like to know in case I lose anything important in the future.

Also what's the best way out of instances like this, should I have left it to sort itself out?

if youare using PER PROJECT FOLDERS then anything you recorded up to the point of a crash (assuming no buffering by the hard drive, etc) will be saved in the [DRIVE LETTER]:\CAKEWALK PROJECTS\[PROJECT NAME]\AUDIO folder.
if you're not using PER PROJECT FOLDERS then go to [DRIVER LETTER]:\CAKEWALK PROJECTS\AUDIO
    for global audio.

Ah yes, thanks for that, it was the first place I looked, but I've just realised why I couldn't find them before.

I did a series of saves during the evening, saving each time as set 1,2,3,4 and would have saved the last one as set 5.
As I saved after recording, set 4 project's audio was recorded as set 3, therefore I missed the audio because I was expecting it to be set 5, which I now realise didn't exist at the time of the big freeze.

Unfortunately the audio tracks were corrupted anyway, so it's still unusable.

So...onto my next question, If you put EQ and Compressors into a track's effects bin, does it affect the audio when it's recorded?

Now that I've set up my template for recording our rehearsals, and spent hours mixing the first session, can I set up the template with all my effects and faders set the same as my final mix projects so I save 90% of my mixing time when I record next week?

no, that's the beauty of sonar (and all DAWs) - the FX are not printed to the recording until you either bounce that track to audio or export it.  even then the original is still left in tact.  only if you use PROCESS>AUDIO functions is it printed to the original track.

yes, you can set up your template with your FX in it.  just save as a template.

OK mate, thanks for your help, had a couple of instances of Sonar not loading properly after trying to import those audio files, had to shut down the laptop twice before it came back up.

    Scary stuff.
