cutting out coffee

OK, sorry for swearing in the curch - I'm on my second day completely without coffee and I NEVER thought it would be this painful! My head hurts, I'm drowsy and relatively cranky as well...

That stuff is POTENT!!

yeah... kicking the caffine habit can be tough for a few days, depending on how much you were using previously.

drink water, use tylenol, tough it out.

Bapu - sure is! And I'm drinking it while listening to your latest Song forum offering!

Alegria - I'm sure you're right but I drink WAAAAY too much coffee. I don't care how good it is for my heart when it makes me feel all weird otherwise and useless without any. I'm going cold turkey and will try to build up the habbit again in a more moderate way. Anyways, enjoy your Moka!

Herb - water and chewing gum seems to do the trick. I've decided to have a coke for dinner. Caffeine - powerful stuff!!

I quit coffee "cold turkey" about 14 or 15 years ago. I was already very sick so I probably did not notice the withdrawal.

    Hi,

I have not had regular coffee for 30 years ... and since the doctor put me on blood pressure medication (he's trying to give me diabetes, gangrene and then cancer ... in that order!!!!!) ... I have had a sip or two.

Mostly I drink half a cup, if that, of DECAF ... or Unleaded as I call it!

Lately, I have been taking those low fat expresso mixes and adding a shot or two of coffee to them, so the coffee intake is minor, but you can feel the rush if needed. Generally, with my bad eye sight and being in front of the computer at work, there are days that I can not continue with bad headaches ... time to go home and take a siesta to kill the headache.

But at 61, I'm finding that a bit of coffee is not hurting anything and is helping the day move along ... although I do not recommend using "coffee" as a replacement for your "energy", which I do not do for the most part, but it does help on the last hour of work each day, when things get hard for me visually, and it is foggy and annoying.

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Being without coffee is a **** and usually I just get really grumpy and get head aches and go hunting for it with a menace. But cold turkey willingly, now that's a hangover and the trip at the same time.

I wonder if I'll sleep better tonight

For the past 7 years, I've called coffe "fuel". I drink WAY to much of it and sometimes it's been the only thing keeping my engine running. Since quiting smoking I've wanted to quit everything. After coffee I'll quit milk. I don't think coffee will kill you but I worry about stomach problems for excessive intake of coffee. And seriously, it doesn't taste good enough to risk an ulcer.

BTW, this is my second attempt to go cold turkey. Last time I lasted two days before I almost stabbed someone - fingers crossed this time

I can drink a pot or more every day for two weeks then stop completely for the next two.  I'm so glad I don't suffer from caffeine withdrawal...  That said, if I did, I wouldn't quit cold turkey, I'd gradually bring the amount down to a manageable amount first.

As for the health benefits, caffeine (in moderate amounts) helps the brain, not the heart.  In larger amounts it doesn't help anything!  (Quite the opposite.)

If you think you need it for the pick-me-up effects, then try taking more B vitamins (especially B-12).  They can make a huge difference and are water-soluable so you don't have to worry about overdoing it.

I submit it's not a hijack when th OP hisownsef admits to listening to a submission of mine. I was gently pointing out that the OP had not commented on some other submissions of mine.

Or...... it was flatulent flat out self-promotional fred hijack.

I switched to tea a few years ago because the coffee was killing me. Before I switched completely I progressively went from 2 pots a day down 1-2 cups a day then to nothing. If you drank so much it's giving you major withdrawals maybe you should try weaning yourself down to a reasonable amount before taking the final plunge. Also by switching to tea I didn't really get any withdrawal because I still had some caffeine getting into my system Just not as much and VIA a far less toxic vehicle. It's the acids in coffee that make it so nasty on the body.

Yes, Tea isn't bad. I've always liked tea. I've had a couple of cups since last week and that's fine. The head ache and grumpyness was over after a couple of days. It's cool. I've decided that I'm not going to have any coffee what so ever until Christmas. Hopefully I can keep it at a moderate level after that.

But the effects are great! Less tired than normal now and I'm way more concentrated and relaxed. Perfect!

I've decided to have a coke for dinner. Caffeine - powerful stuff!!

Good luck breaking the habit, man! I remember getting the headaches when I quit coffee for a while.

You mention Coke - for me that's the single toughest habit to break. I've quit smoking, drinking alcohol, and even managed to drop coffee for a while. But the Cola habit is the only one I couldn't get rid of. I did manage to reduce the quantities that I drink, but I still have at least one every day.

OTOH, I drink phenomenal quantities of liquid every day - water, milk, orange juice, vegetable juice, gatorade, sparkling water, coffee (usually 6 of them or more), cola - I basically always have something to drink at hand. So I guess cola accounts for a negligible portion of that.

    Thanks

He he, I quit Cola years ago! Well, I do have the occasional drink of coke - I'm not an animal - but never really got into the habbit of it and now I hardly buy it. Coffee, not a problem today at all. And I feel great! I even had the weekend off for once, that probably helped a lot to stay away from it.

I suppose if you've quit smoking, alchohol and some coffee, then a nice little Cola should be alowed.

Me quiting things is just me realizing that I'm stuffing my face with too much sh!t and need to look after my self. I'd like to do a soft "reset" of my self and get in shape

I tried quitting coffee once.  It took a great deal of effort, but I finally repaired the damage to the space time continuum without too many lingering effects.  Sorry about that Bermuda Triangle thing.  It couldn't be helped.
