.cwp Project File disappeared after "General Error"

I opened an existing project and did some work, saving regularly. I exported a wav file of the song and then tried to save before closing. I click on the Save menu option and got a "General Error" window and could not save. I closed the project and could not find it in the project folder or entire C: drive. Was surprised it just disappeared. Anybody ever have this happen and did you ever find the file? I rebuilt from an old bundle but I lost a bunch of work.

When writing out the project a temporary file is created. This file uses a typical system generated temp file name so it will not be found searching for the project name. Once the temp file is completed it is renamed to the project name. Even if the temp file could be determined it may not be usable by SONAR.

FYI if you get a General Error message, just press Play and it should go away.

If you never saved the file with its title that you created it with, you will not find it.

If you saved it before, then it will disappear from the pull down menu that is listed under "file open", but you should be able to find it wherever you keep your files.

I would suggest having auto-save set for 10 minutes as sometimes I forget to save for a couple of hours in the midst of creativity, but the auto-save will save every 10 minutes, or whatever you set it to save to.

It was an existing project file that I reopened that day to work on. I searched the C: Drive and could not find it - with or without the .cwp extension. It remained in the drop down and when selected to open it displayed a box saying it could not be found. I had saved it less than 5 minutes before it disappeared.
I'm surprised it just disappeared without a trace.  I hope someone will stumble on this thread who has had this problem and found the file somewhere.

I suggest you run a full chkdsk scan on all your hard drive partitions.

closed the project and could not find it in the project folder or entire C: drive.

C drive is for programs, generally. You should check your dedicated audio drive (D,E, or F) and make sure you have CWP and Per  Project audio files checked in the preference menu where you can define where you want and how you want the sonar projects stored.

If the project was never saved, then it will not be there as you because of the error. What are the Sonar project specs?  I hope your not doing anything crazy like 196kHz.

Why would a chkdsk help me find a missing file?

I don't have a dedicated audio drive. I use the C: Drive for everything. I run the defaults settings in Sonar X3.  The project was saved weeks before and also several times during the day I was working on it.

    To summarize:
This was an existing project that I opened that day to do some work on
I saved the project several times during the session - I always do saves between takes/after edits etc.
The last time I clicked Save, I received the General Error pop up - over and over.
I could not save the project and closed Sonar, assuming my last save (which  would have included everything anyway because I save a lot) would just reopen and have everything.
I opened Sonar and when I clicked on the project in OPEN, it said it did not exist.
I searched the entire hard drive and found no trace of the cwp file.
The Audio folder still existed but of course, no easy way to use the files without the project file settings.
I opened a bundle file from the previous week and redid all the changes I could remember in a new project.
Has anyone ever lost a cwp file like this and figured out where to fid it?

Why not run it and find out if this could be an issue?
If your hard drive indexes are screwed you might end up losing other files as well. I hope you are backing up.

I had this happen recently with a "Disk May Be Full" error message.  I had been working for a while and saving regularly.  The audio engine stopped and I wasn't able to save or play although the program didn't freeze and it don't close.  After a while, (and some more messing with it), it gave me the ...Sonar must close" message and my saved .cwp file was gone.  The auto save file was also corrupt so all that work was gone.

    I do feel your pain.

If you're asking me, I'm afraid I don't know of such a file.  'Auto Save' is where I'd look.  In my case, that too was unusable.

Do you also "save as" periodically or do you always overwrite a version? With any program, not just Sonar, I highly recommend an occasional "save as."

I opened Sonar and when I clicked on the project in OPEN, it said it did not exist.

I think if Sonar exits abnormally, the project you were working on won't show up as a recent file.

I searched the entire hard drive and found no trace of the cwp file.

I don't know what the deal is with search, but if I search on .cwp or even *.cwp nothing shows up, even though I have plenty of projects on this machine. Maybe I don't have some "search on suffixes too" box checked somewhere in Windows.

The Audio folder still existed but of course, no easy way to use the files without the project file settings.

It should be in the per-project folder, along with any auto-saves (which will be identified with auto-save in the file name).

Auto Save is not turned on so there is no Auto Save file.
Save as would not have saved this file as it was completely deleted - if you are suggesting a different project name then it will create a whole other headache with duplication of audio files.
Yes Windows will not always find what you search for - indexing helps.
The project name didn't show up in the Open Dialog box, but it did appear in the File / Open list

Do you have a virus scanner? Check the quarantine area. Otherwise I don't hold up much hope, it's an extremely odd scenario. Ta.

"Save as" does not require saving into a different folder. The existing project folder can contain multiple versions of the same project using different names created with the "Save As" function. In addition to AutoSave, Versioning will also create a round robin of versions of a project in the project folder.

It could be Windows failed while trying to rename the temporary file. This might result in a missing project file.

So is a file disappearing. Extremely unlikely but nevertheless happened. Yes it's just a small possibility and I just thought I'd make the suggestion and you might want to check it (just like chkdsk suggestion you queried which was also a possibility). I will avoid any further suggestions as you might not like them either.

I run the defaults settings in Sonar X3. The project was saved weeks before and also several times during the day I was working on it.

Default settings? so you never defined a folder saving your projects and you never set up CWP and per project audio files? Your project is where it was last saved at. Nothing will disappear, even with errors. The projects last save will not be harmed.

Also, i saw you asked about a back up./ did you back up your project to another hard drive or CD or DVD? Look there to get your backup. Sonar is only as smart as the person using it. Do not assume you have back ups if you never backed it up.
