digital recording

I am using Music Creator Pro 2004 and recording from a Roland JV 1080 using a Soundblaster analog to digital recording card.
I want to buy a Roland XV 5080 which has SPDIF and R-Bus digital output, and I want to record the digital signal directly with no analog conversion.

What version of Cakewalk do I need?
Does my version do it?
Is SPDIF or R Bus better?
What hardware do I need? Windows.
Is my Creator Pro 2004 files importable into the new software?

Thank
Richard in San Jose

I would think that MCpro2004 will probably do waht you want as long as it's still working on the windows version you have (you didn't say which version of windows).

    I don't know what "R Bus" is.
does your soundblaster have SPDIF input?

In your case, I would probably upgrade to MC5 just because it's only $40 and I know for certain it would work for what you want to do (MC pro probably will also as long as it's still working on your version of windows, but for $40 I'd do it).
I would also buy a better soundcard than the soundblaster.  it's not designed to be a recording soundcard.  I'd probably go with the M-audio 2496 for about $100 IF you have a free PCI slot and IF you're NOT running vista (m-audio drivers for vista are not great).

so to answer your question, you probably don't need anything new IF your soundcard and MCpro are both working on your version of windows and IF your soundcard has SPDIF already on it.  but it wouldn't hurt to much to upgrade them.

    Beagle speaks truth....

The sound card is the important link in the chain. And MC5 is not a bad upgrade for $40 with a good soundcard (not a SB).....
