Does anyone know why 'modulatio' does not work? Pitch bend works fine from the wheel on my Roland PC300 controller, but the modulation effect duesn't happen

It'll depend on what's within the preset itself. In any given preset, open up the MIDI Matrix (third icon in the group of four), and look for CC 1 (Mod Wheel) as a Source. If it's not there, then your mod wheel (at default settings) won't control anything.
But it can be routed to control any number of destinations. Look under 01 - Dimensions at the first three presets. In 11th Dimension, your mod wheel controls the cutoff frequency of the filter. In 14 - 8 Beat caves, it controls five different destinations. And in Above Sea, it raises the first oscillator pitch by an octave.
If you're not getting any of these things to work, it may be on the keyboard side of the equation. If you're looking for a standard "mod wheel brings up vibrato" example, try the Saw Lead under 13 - Leads. The Depth is at 30 in the MIDI Matrix, but if you bring that up to a few hundred instead, you're sure to hear the effect.
